Kurt kinetic road machine question (1)

I continue to have a reoccurring problem we’re after each ride my bike is coming loose in the trainer. I can feel it start to rock around during each ride sometimes it actually starts to loosen the skewer in the rear wheel.
I tried different skewers and I’m not sure what in the world I’m missing.

Anyone else run into this

First, contact KK’s customer support. They are fantastic. I’ve had to contact them before and they’ve gotten back to me FAST.

How many hrs are on your trainer? After mine had about 3000 hrs on it I started having the same issue you’ve described. What worked for me was to replace the Quick Release bushing assembly. KK sent the parts and instructions to me (free because of the warranty) and it was a pretty simple fix.

Give them a shout. They are great and one reason why I’m a huge KK fan.

I have been through 2 road machines and the only time I get this issue is when my quick release skewer is worn out. And it happens pretty much every time the quick release is worn out so that is more than likely the problem.

When you say ‘worn out’ what part / area is wearing ? and is it visible to the eye ?

I8ve not had the problem myself nut just interested in case it does on my KK trainer.

Thanks

The mechanism within the lever portion of the quick release eventually gets to the point that it won’t really tighten anymore and you end up just screwing the quick release on rather than using the lever when it gets worn out. When that happens your road machine will end up unscrewing it while you are riding. At least that is what happened with mine.

I’ll change it out tomorrow and see if that’s it. If not I’ll call KK.

I had this issue and actually rocked the bike right out of the trainer. Fortunately it only cost me a bent spoke.

I ended up taking both screw mechanisms apart and cleaning them and then tightened everything back in place.

It’s all good now. No new parts were required.

I have replaced the fluid unit on warranty. If you can provide proof of purchase KK makes it super easy on you.

is the non-drive side lock bolt(used to center wheel) tightened? I had to use a Channellock on mine or it will come loose and then the non-drive side will slowly loosen until bike falls out of trainer. I used to try just maxing it out by hand, but never secure enough.

Yes, but the Drive side mech started popping open today. I need to open it up and basically start trying everything recommended here.

Looks like it was the skewer. It was so jacked up that when I put the bike in the stand and started backing it out it just sheared off.

Ok, so not a total fix. It’s not rocking around like it was but after a long ride the locking mechanism on the drive side part of the trainer had still loosened up a little

Sounds like it’s time to replace the QR Bushing. They’ll send you one w instructions and it takes 10 min to do. All you need is a 4mm hex wrench, a hammer and a piece of tape. Again, all free w warranty. Just email customer service and they’ll help out.

Agreed…

Generally speaking the KK Road Machines - we have 3 between two cyclists in the house (non-Smart versions), that have been kicking around for years, are bomb-proof!

We had an issue with the spring mechanism that helps hold the bike wheel onthe roller that needed replacing. More kudos for the KK Customer Service - I think the part was in a Fed Ex envelope and out there door before I had even hung up the phone with the Customer Service Rep - no questions asked, and replaced completely free!

So here’s a thought, just to double check:

There’s a bolt in the left side skewer cup that’s used to attach the cup to the big screw that you can tighten on the left. That bolt is intentionally a bit loose; even when fully tightened, there’s some play. That said…

A month or so ago I noticed my bike getting progressively less steady over a week or so. Eventually noticed that the bolt in that skewer cup itself was super loose. When I tightened the trainer on the right side it too away a lot of looseness, but not all of it. Quick tightening of that bolt, all is well.
