Kuat NV2 Rack - strap won't fit aero wheel

Any Kuat owners out there?

I just unpacked my new NV2 last night, installed it on my truck…and it’s as awesome as I thought it would be. On my 2013 Ford Flex Limited Titanium edition in deep impact blue, it looks beautiful.

Now…the challenge.

I have hung a Cervelo P5 on the rack, and all is good except that I am running deep dish aero wheels on the bike, and I can’t get the rear wheel strap around the rear wheel as the strap is not long enough. The wheel is a Hed Stinger 9 Flamme Rouge, and is 90mm deep – see the wheel here http://www.hedcycling.com/stinger/default.asp?content=9.

Anyone out there with a Kuat NV or NV2 running deep dish wheels? Did you find a solution? Maybe a longer strap for this purpose, or some kind of an extension to the strap?

Thanks.

I would suggest a bungee cord or some other type of elastic strap for when you are running a deep dish wheel in the NV. Besides the fact that the strap will not reach, by using some type of soft elastic strap you don’t have to worry about scuffing up your rear wheel. I personally would use this method whenever running an expensive rear in the NV. Awesome rack, you will really enjoy it.

Toe straps ? Or something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/250762037042?lpid=83&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=83&ff19=0

I have the same rack and its awesome! I think if you contact Kuat they make some longer straps you can order from them for this exact problem. I ran into the same issue and just used bungee cords or straps to secure the rear wheel but the longer straps from kuat would be perfect.

What I did was to take some rolls of velcro fastener strips, stick them back to back, and use about a 15-20inch strap as the rear wheel tie down. works pretty good.

A bungee would work also, a piece of string or rope, or even if you take a nylon strap off of a backpack or something that you can tighten down will work. It does not have to be super heavy duty, it doesn’t take much to keep your bike on that rack. You could even string together some re-usable zip ties.

Kuat definitely makes longer straps or you could always put a cinch strap around the whole tire and cinch it under the rack. That’s what I had planned to do with my rear Jet Disc but I think I’ve just decided to swap the rear out with a training wheel when I transport it and not risk it.

Good idea… I should have done that a while ago. I’ve had the same issue as the OP, but I’d just deflate the tire any time I would transport it. Not a huge deal, but a longer strap would be more convenient.

Awesome - Kuat just emailed me back. Here it is, only $15! Woot! http://kuatracks.shptron.com/p/strap-extender?pp=12

I just ran into the same problem while using my Zipp 808 in the rear. I let most of the air out of the tire and was able to secure it with the original fastener. I will, however, order the extender.

I went with toe straps. Works fantastic. The Kuat extender has some issues, I ditched it pretty quick.

The extender doesn’t work well. I tried it on my Zipp 808 and a hed jet 90 and it doesn’t work.

Velcro straps or a bungee type cord is much better. Don’t waste $$ on the extender strap.

Agreed ref the extender. While it does function to extend the length of the strap, the hard plastic ratchet and bolt attaching things together tends to rub on the fairing of the wheel. Every time I use it I need to play with things to make sure I don’t arrive at my destination with scratches or rub/wear marks on the wheel.

Great info! It sounds like Kuat needs to make a longer replacement strap…not an extender. For now, I guess I will simply let the air out to get it buckled.

I haven’t had a problem with my Firecrest 808’s and their extender. Additionally to those that have you should let their customer service know. I have had great experiences with them.

vikingmd, do you have a photo of your 808 with the extender?
