So I’ve been using Michelin Krylion Carbons as my training tires and love the longevity of them but I’ve had it with how difficult they’ve been to put on or take off of my Easton EA50 wheels. The big question is, is the difficulty due to the combination of Michelin tires and Easton wheels? My new Slice has Shimano wheels and I’m wondering if I’ll have the same issues or should I go with a different training tire.
Survey says?
Its the tire. PITA to get on both a SOUL S4.0 and CXP-22 rims (I have them on both). I have been lucky enough to not have to change them in the field yet (about 3000 miles total on the 2 sets). I’m hoping that they have “loosened up” a little with wear and being mounted.
I just recommended these a few threads up and then saw this. I don’t have any trouble putting them on Mavics. I switch them pretty often with my trainer tire and it gets even easier after a few changes.
It’s the tire. I love the Krylion Carbons and have used them on 3 different wheels (Shimano R500, Mavic Aksium, and a 3rd cheapo wheel that I can’t remember). All three were a pain in the ass. Thankfully, without how durable the tires were, the only time I ever had to remove them was to replace them (lasted about 2500 miles for the rear tire on Michigan roads). I NEVER (knock on wood) have gotten an on the road flat with them. I’ll keep cursing as I replace worn ones but I’m gonna keep buying them.
The same problem with mavic aksium and kinlin. But anyway I think it is one the best tyre for training: no punctures, not bad rolling.
no problem at all with HED Ardennes
.
I use the Lithion tires and the first time putting them on my Mavics was a pain in the ass. It seems to have gotten better.
Tires that are difficult to install can be warmed in the dryer prior to installation. Low temp for 5 minutes works for me. My dryer came with a rack that doesn’t spin, so that’s helpful.
Been using these tires for years and no problems on any of the wheelsets I’ve used. FP60’s Shimano RS80’s, Token C60’s.
It’s a combination of the rims/tires…not just the tires

Love my Krylions. On Easton hoops. I routinely get 2-3k miles (or more if you count in kms) on them. Been using them as training tires for 7-8 years.
On my third set of Krylions. They are tight! I warm them up and then stretch them prior to first time installation. After that I can roll them on w/o a tire lever. Works for me.
Allow me to introduce you to your new best friend, and never leave home without it:

Tight fit on my Reynolds, but on my third set of Krylion Carbons. Very durable on and off the trainer. Love the tire!
That tool looks like it’s about 10"- 12" long. Not exactly the kind of thing I want to carry around on every ride.
It’s actually 8.5" long, and fits in a jersey pocket just fine.
I’ve got a full-sized one at home & a sawed-off one I take on rides. You don’t need the full leverage of the entire handle.
There is also a mini version by VAR, but they’re impossible to find.
I have Krylions on my Easton EA90 SLX and Mavic Ksyrium Elite. Definitely tight on both, but I’ve had worse combinations. Awesome training tire and very durable on the trainer.
I’ve struggled getting the tires on as well. The dryer method and/or the tool work great. You don’t need the tool on the road because the tire will be warm from the road friction. Also, it will have been stretched and fitted around the rim by that point. Never had a problem on the road, only in a cold basement. Best to use the dryer when no one else is home. Just saying it’s difficult to explain to your spouse.
they’re a beast to torque onto the stock rims of my D6. i’ve only taken them off once to change a hefty puncture, and they weren’t AS bad to put back on. a decent 1-beer challenge.
