I was wondering what people wear for the swim in kona. I have seen people wearing a speedo backzip kneeskin suit, but I can’t find the one with a back zipper. I was also wondering if it makes a difference as far as drag goes.
you might see a lot of 2xu elite tri suits this year. check them out…I have one…super comfy, good stretch and pretty water-phobic
You wear a 2xu for the whole race, right? I was originally looking for something to go over my team stuff. May have to re-think…
I only would use the Elite for short distance races as a tri suit. As a non-wetsuit swim, I would use it over my kit
I use the Speedo fastskin
.
alot of the top swimmers in kona use Skinfit’s one-piece, including peter reid who relabeled his jersey with his sponsor logos.
Good idea to use a suit designed for 100/200 meters races in a 4000y open water swim?
A lot of people doing that
.
Anyone know how the Desoto tri-suit compares to the other brands (Speedo and Skinfit) in the water?
My question is similar, but not as advanced - Do I wear a swim brief and then change into tri shorts, or wear tri shorts in the swim and stay in them. I haven’t done that not covered by a wetsuit.
If you plan to win your age group or set a new course record, then wear the same thing for the entire race. Otherwise, wear your swimsuit for the swim and then change into your tri shorts.
Don’t underestimate how sticky and unpleasant the salt water soaked outfit will be for another several hours. Not to mention, I personally think the salt water causes more chafing than fresh water or plain sweat.

I’ll be just a participant there. That is exactly what my thought is.
I swam (and biked and ran) in my DeSoto shorts. No problem. You’ll be majorly sweating within the first 20 minutes on the bike anyway. In the race, the other thing to consider is putting on tight tri shorts on wet skin.
This may sound dumb (probably is) but I have never swam in my Desoto Power Tri’s w/out a wetsuit over them, and wonder if I should do that for the 1st time in HI. I do 100% of my bike training in them and absolutely love them.
Funny - The last time I did HI, '92, I wore a speedo the whole way - I’m not doing that again! I still do sprint’s and Oly’s in just the speedo, although my wife says I am getting too old for such things :-)!
Since it has been 14 years for me since my Kona 3 peat, I am open to any and all logistical suggestions…I hear things have changed. Thank goodness I don’t have to run (or walk) the Pit!
I know!
Get a skinsuit and puremadness logo it!
and put GO JEN on your bum! Wish I could come watch you race!
