Hi, I’m a bigger guy weighing about 185lbs and wondering how many other bigger guys have qualified for Kona who weigh over 180lbs? Please post your height, weight, age. As well as your swim time, bike time , run time and total time. Include your best half ironman time as well and which course it was on.
I’m wondering what my chances of qualifying in 2012 would be if I focused on the ironman distance.
Hey, I’m a Calgarian but I’m at the volunteer stage, not racing yet. But just so you know, a full is WAY different from a half. I’ve volunteered at the medical tent in Penticton (last 2 years) and it is WAY different than a half (volunteered for T2 at the Calgary 1/2 last 2 years).
But if you can get an entry to Kona go for it and your times sound really good. Be aware though that the heat will be way different than you are used to in Kona. Plus you will need to factor in the longer distance. Still, everyone is an " Iron Virgin" once in your life :).
why are you 185? Why not 195 or 165? Weight is not an absolute. Besides, 185 is not really that heavy anyway. 1 minute per pound on the run for IM… so you’re 10 minutes slower than me off the bat. Doesn’t matter that much on the bike, unless you’re doing an uphill race, or you’re really wide, affecting aerodynamics.
Get down to 5% body fat and then lose upper body muscle, but know it’s all about training and execution to Kona Q.
And oh yeah, you need to be able to bike with the big boys.
I was hoping to find out how many people here over 180lbs have qualified for Kona. Looking at most kona qualifiers it seems very few bigger athletes racing there. I know its about the training but I was just curious if many heavier guys have made it to the big island. I can bike with the big boys which of course is a big help! Most people I know that have qualified are in the 150-165 lb range. Hopefully some bigger qualifiers will chime in.
If NOBODY over 185lb ever qualified then that should push him even MORE. Since he can say that he’s the first. Now if plenty of over 185lb qualifies, then it gives him hope. Win-win Your opinion of this being a pointless exercise is just that, an opinion.
Lol, I’m aware it requires hard work and dedication! Obviously its not easy for most people and would require the necessary training and commitment. I was more curious about the bigger qualifiers times in each discipline and what area they struggled with the most. I’m assuming the run is the area where the extra weight catches up to the bigger athletes. Either way no answer in this thread will influence my decision to attempt to qualify if I decide to commit to it:)
it’s not an opinion… it’s fact. It is a fact that wasting time thinking about this will not get anyone to Kona. Hard work and dedication gets you to Kona. Making a plan does. Running a well executed race does. It’s also a fact that qualifying for Kona is a very tough task… getting tougher by the day. People are fitter, slots are fewer per race, with more guys vying for them.
That sentence is an opinion. If the OP finds this “exercise” to motivate him to train harder, how is it pointless? Maybe it’s pointless to you, but not to him. Hence, your OPINION that this “exercise” is pointless, is just that, an OPINION.
OK, you keep thinking you’re right and I’ll keep qualifying for Kona.
There’s a reason I’m harping on this one minute point, and it’s not to be a dick. Framing the problem correctly is the most important step of any challenging endeavor. Framing it incorrectly, as I believe the OP is doing, no matter how motivating or well meaning, is a step in the wrong direction.
You don’t have to explain yourself. I believe we can have a civil discussion without thinking the other is being a/an “choose an expletive”. I still do disagree. It is great that you’re self motivated to “train hard to qualify for Kona”. No one here is disagreeing that hard work, proper execution and some luck are all essential ingredients for qualifying for Kona, heck it is for most things. HOWEVER, different individuals have different “motivations” for putting in the required hard work and proper execution. Like I said, it’s great that you’re able to self motivate. For others, it is to have hope. For some, it is for the someone else’s sake and I’m sure quite a few do it because they like suffrage. Whatever it is, each of us has a “motivation” for doing this. It’s a personal thing. If the OP finds this motivation by knowing the answers to his questions, then how is his thread pointless? Your assertion that this “exercise” is pointless, therefore is your OPINION.
By the way;
"OK, you keep thinking you’re right and I’ll keep qualifying for Kona. "
adds nothing to a discussion (other than my penis is larger than your penis mentality).
