Why do they have that ramp up to the finish line just to come down again just past the line? The only thing I can come up with is to give the whole area a better view.

ya i kinda image the finish more of a stage for the athletes. let them be elevated to show off to the large crowd
I think it’s elevated so it can be used as a gallows for those racers caught cheating. No more “time penalties”. Get caught drafting and they raise the finishing tape just as you cross the line. It forms a noose and the trapdoor opens up and WHAM. Hanged by the neck until dead. THAT should serve as a pretty good deterrent to the next wheel sucker! (and it makes for GREAT TV!!)
