Given speed suits are out what is the fastest option? Should I go speedo or is there some type of legal option that is faster?

What to wear to swim fast?
Chlorine, all summer.
What’s wrong with just tri shorts. Any seconds you lose to a speedo would be made up in transition by not having to change. I have a singlet with a full length zip that takes no longer to put on than a race belt. That’s my plan.
I suppose that the fastest low cost options for the entire race would be speedo only all the way with a Faris mankini added in T2
I was planing on using my old SPEEDO FASTSKIN suit (last use was Kona 2005, I think). It is textile, so I think it is legal for Kona 2010.
The tri suit makes the T1 strip-down easy, with tri shorts and tri top underneath.
Hello rcmioga and All,
Desoto or Kiwami.
Probably some others out there.
I think some of their trisuits are faster than speedo.
Cheers,
Neal
My suggestion would be to wear a speedo one piece tri suit. It has fastskin FS2 material so its fast in the water. i wear it for ITU racing and it definitely feels fast plus its comftorable. that or the bluesevent nero tx it is textile so its legal. wore it for swim meets, the thing basically pushes you through the water and its a jammer.

Thanks! Is the nerocomp also legal for kona this year?
I’m just wearing my normal ZOOT race kit. It’s all about the bike anyway.
Blue Seventy will be releasing a Kona legal swim skin (from what I’ve heard). Someone said this will be available/released in September. With their history I’d bet that will be the single fastest outfit to a fast swim–to answer your question.
I am working with Zerod and our suits are really hydrodynamics.
At the moment a few shops are carrying our stuff , our official debut in the USA will be at Interbike, but let me know if i can serve of any help if you are interested.

Where can you buy a Faris type Mankini?
No need to post links to the Borat Mankini please.
Yes! they are legal.
Also what Bueno said about the Zerod suits, those are amazing suits, the water just slides right off of them. Definitely look into that!

Definitely seems the simplest route, it’s the one I’m going with too. I’m going to use the Skinfit range, they do a full zip tri top. Load the pockets with anything I want, put in my T1 bag and a few seconds is all it’ll take in transition.
You do realize that THE MOST you’ll gain using any of these nonsense speedsuits vs a traditional speedo-type brief is about 1 second per 100m? I blows my mind that so many triathletes spend so much time and $$ to save themselves a damn minute in a 140 mile race.

Doesn’t this decision depend on your goals? A gal I know made the podium at Kona by 30 seconds. For some folks, a speedsuit would be worth that.

Sure, but considering that doesn’t apply to the OP and a 30 second margin for the podium is the exception and far from the rule, a speedsuit doesn’t matter in the slightest.

I have a personal preference for the Kiwami Amphibian, but many of the best ITU-oriented suits are very good. I like the Amphibian because I can wear it all day, but I’d still choose it even if it were just for the swim. But if you have a strong preference for the cut of Orca, 2XU, BlueSeventy, and some others, they also make very fine products as well. But definitely check out the Amphibian.

Well, at Kona 2009, the difference between Kona podium or not was not always 30 seconds, but just a quick glance at the male age groups, here’s the approximate margin of difference between a podium (5th) and 6th place:
Males 30-34 1:20
35-39 :45
40-44 1:00
45-49 1:45
50-54 :50
55-59 :19
wow…the swim and the transitions DO matter!
