Having qualified for Kona for the first time, I was wondering if it’s worth it to go to the Carbo Load and Awards Parties, especially since extra ticket prices are fairly steep. I think the Carbo Load party makes somewhat sense. Not having a shot at any awards, I was wondering if I should just enjoy a nice island dinner with my wife that has definitely earned this vacation during my training time. Is there anything else going on at the awards banquet that just calling winners on the stage?
Do both. Immerse yorself in the experience…this could be your one and only. The awards is a great time to meet some of the pros…especially if you sit in the back by the bathroom!!. In 2003 Peter Reid stood in line for the bathroom 3 times during dinner(I was sitting directly in front of the line…) and he was extremely affable as he held on for his turn! Also met tons of foreign athletes. Just a great time.

I went to Kona for the first time last fall and went to both. I would definitely recommend going to both. I had a lot of fun both times and there is lots of beer at the post-race party
You should definitely do both. The awards party is amazing–really good food (just about the time you’re ready to eat some too) great company and last year anyway, a very very funny speech from Normann Stadler. Lots of beer too. Have fun!
