In case you didn’t recognize them, or have never met them, the two guys in the front with the water polo caps and compression socks on are ex pros/race directors of NAS, Roch Frey and Paul Huddle. They are the originators of this run, and if you didn’t already know, it was set up to mock the Euro dudes that walked all around town in their speedos. There was no place safe from them, shopping, resturants, movie theatres, they were everywhere…
Just for that, I think the next euro dude who goes to xantusia should prance around in a speedo the whole time…
Indeed, Mark it was Huddle and Frey that got this whole crazy thing going. Before the UP run even got started I still remember being in Kona for the first time I did IMH in 1989 and heading to the grocery store to see the site of a couple of German triathletes cruising around the aisles with nothing more than speedos and flip flops on as they did their grocery shopping for the week! The UP run was started as a send-up and a back-lash to this outrageous behaviour.
The water polo caps are a nice touch.
The guy in a visor, white briefs with text on them, and black knee-high compression socks is the great Michael Lovato. The gorgeous blonde chick to his left in the pink visor, black top with red strings, and pink knee-high compression socks is Amanda Lovato.
I am nursing a skinned knee from this morning’s run that was caused by paying a little too much attention to Ms. Lovato and not enough attention to a curb. It was worth it

I was in Kona in the late 90s and this had just started. It was a pretty small group. Kinda makes me sad that it’s a big event now. I also remember very vividly the inspiration for this event - the euros doing their grocery shopping with nothing but speedos, flip-flops and fanny-packs. Man, that sight took some getting used to. Good luck to everyone in kona this weekend.
