Knee tracking. How much lateral movement is reasonable?

Been having knee pain for a while now. Decided to bite the bullet and get a RETUL fitting. Discovered that my lateral knee movement was 52mm on one side and 39mm on the other when we started. Spent a lot of time doing different things and got it down to 39mm and 31mm.

Curious if anyone knows their lateral knee movement to compare. I have no basis for this opinon but off the top of my head 52mm seems like a lot.

Also curious of some things people have done to try to improve.

This is the ninth wonder of the world. The best answer I have found is as little that is needed so there is no pain. Make sure to keep track of what seems to work and what does not.

Thanks.

It will be a challenge to see what works and what does not. It is really not practical to schedule RETUL time to get a measurement over and over again. But I am not sure what I can do on my own to see what lowers it.

I would guess the only thing I can do is put a dot on my knee and video tape and on the computer try to see the movement. I will need to take the video in the middle of a Computrainer session where I am pushing a similiar wattage and rpms. But I think this is going to be really difficult.

Or I guess I can get a bunch of things to test and buy a few hours with my fitter and RETUL. But I really prefer to do things myself.

I’m just curious in to what you are doing to decrease movement.

I get knee pain every once in a while, usually when I’m in a race, and I would like to try to get rid of it.

I switched to a much stiffer sole shoe and a pretty minimal insole. This is what made the biggest change so far. My hip angle has also been opened up. It turned out my existing shoe had a lot of flex in it. The new carbon sole shoes have no flex.

I actually switched shoes at one point last year. They were both the same brand but slightly different models. The new ones were lighter. What I did not notice is that the new ones had a lot more flex. I guess to get the weight down :(. The new shoe that I just purchased is the same brand but now had a carbon sole.

I do think it is possible that my knee pain became worst when I switches shoes last year. But I really did not track it and I usually actually switched between shoes last year.

Plus I usually wear my shoes really, really loose. I have tightened them up. With all of this I still am unhappy with how high my numbers still are. I really would like to be done in the high 20s and see if I can then go wild with my cycling. Right now my knees are really holding me back.
