I have no prior knee issues. Mid 40’s…Mild workout in the morning (75min on the trainer, 20min brick)…went to work…drove 3hrs for vaca, went out to eat, unpacked (no issues)…woke at 2am, couldn’t walk without paid (both knees)…going on 7 days…better now (just swimming with little kick)
Ortho drained fluid…said “no gout, xrays look good (no mri), yanking/twisting knee test was good”.
Lab results: White blood count in knee: 15,000 (not normal), fluid Yellow. rare epithelial cells
So, for anyone that has had something like this…Auto Immune disease of some sort? (Rheumatoid)?
Would like to here your story (post or PM)…looking at the future…FOP Age Grouper, but my health is the key now.
Not trying to diagnosis it here, but trying to obtain info/knowledge to better plan my next step.
Thanks in advance…joe
wow…Note: shiver… at my age, family/health are the A priority (been doing this too long and I know what the priority is), this wasn’t about that. This was a fact finding mission only. A few pm’s have been good…tks
What region of the country do you live in? If you have ticks, force your doc to test for Lyme. I missed the early symptoms of mine (flu-like), and phase 2 is arthritis-like swelling in a large joint (my knee). That usually crops up 6-8 months after you get bitten. Anyway, I had 3 docs, 9 visits, 4 knee drains (ouch!) and one arthroscopy over the course of 4 months before someone thought to run the Lyme test. NYT or Boston Globe did a series on the disease a while back, and the pics of knee swelling looked EXACTLY like what I had.
In any event, good luck with it. Sucks to be chasing a mystery condition.

So, for anyone that has had something like this…
Had a VERY similar incident with fluid on my knee a few years ago. Mine was a bull-riding (like rodeo, cowboys) incident, I was airborne and the bull came around and smashed a horn right above my knee, throwing me back up in the air above 10ft. I was certain, while flying in the air, that my femur had broken.
Far from my first knee injury at that time.
Luckily for me, no broken bones, and only inflammation in my knee joint - no tearing. BUT, serious “water on the knee”. My entire knee was a waterbed. So we drained it, high lymphocyte count (white blood cells) epithelials, and high plasma build in the fluid (yellow fluid). Drained it every day for a week, kept it compressed, then drained it twice during the next week until it stopped flooding.
The docs at the time commented on the oddity of the mix, but there was no other indication of any particular issues on my bloodwork, nor has there been since (I see orthopedic surgeon regularly for steroid injections for another injury, and a neurologist to monitor my brain health since I’m a high risk repetitive concussion guy).
So we never did figure out why there was a high WBC content or the plasma/serum flood in my knee fluid, but all of the other bloodwork done on venous blood was normal.
