I ran some stairs 2 night ago. Yesterday on the trainer I noticed that my knee was popping on the top outside of the joint. When I put my hand over it I can feel the popping too. There is aboslutely ZERO pain. Just an audible click and a movement I can feel.
Does anyone have any idea what my problem is and if it is serious?

My left knee, when I squat deep enough ( >90*), my IT band rolls over the protruding head of my tibia. It showed up yesterday on the trainer as well, I realized I was flexing (?) my ankle/ pointing my toe down, which caused my knee to bend farther than normal at the top. After dropping the heel, no more knee pop.
There is a little bit of positional effect where it will or won’t happen. Beyond the knee angle, I haven’t really put the thought into identifying things like: If my foot is turned this way… Or, if I turn my knee in/out…
This first showed up MANY years ago, doesn’t happen much on its own, so I haven’t had anyone look at it… other than to show it off to my coach.
YMMV, Joe
I wouldn’t necesssarily say nothing to worry about. That is likely part of your IT band rolling over your knee. It may not hurt now, but it could lead to inflamation and pain if the “popping” irritates the tendon. The stair running probably made your glutes very tight, which in turn can make your IT band tight. that’s why it’s popping, b’c it’s no longer “rolling smoothly”, but is too tight, therefore “popping”. If it were me, I’d stretch the heck out of my glutes every night for a while, along with the other muscles of the upper leg. My answer may be a bit extreme to others, but I’ve had ITBS in both legs and would not wish that on anyone.
I could be way off, but I wouldn’t dismiss it as nothing.
either ITB, or possibly patella-femoral (knee-cap), either way nothing to worry about. Stretching actually doesnt do much, despite what most people will tell you. Hip abductor strengthening can help, if it starts to get sore.
You may also be developing condramalacia (sp?). When I had it it I had popping of the knee which developed into tendonitis. Some time off from running and propper shoes (I pronated pretty bad) and have had no problems since. For PT I did exercises that strengthened the muscles around the knee cap.
Hi, Sounds like it may be your ITB slipping over the outside of your knee. I’ve posted a few times on this lately b/c I recently got ITB syndrome (most common runner injury) and it’s awful. Mine didn’t pop but the doctor mentioned that it does pop on some people. I don’t know what your mileage is but if you’re popping then your ITB might already be pretty tough and tight. High mileage may cause it to inflame because of the repetetive motion and then the pain starts. Don’t know if this is your problem but if it is then I think you may have something to worry about. There are specific stretches to do for the ITB easily found by a google search. Hope it ISN’T your click/pop!
