Kkt 1/2 im

Does anybody have any advice for the KKT half IM in May? I’ve done Buffalo Springs a couple of times so I am not too worried about the distance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Rusty

Sleep in, get up at noon, go for a 15 mile hill run in the heat of the day (90+)

Enjoy the great swim though, it is beautiful.

Don’t forget to check out the Kona Brewery after the race!

Aloha,

Larry

Rusty,

I am doing the Kona 1/2 Ironman also, looking forward to it…

Larry Mackey is dead on…in fact, throw on a rubber suit while you run at noon. good thing about this new course is they got rid of the Pit, or so I heard. As for the swim, try not to get distracted by all the sealife…on one training swim there, we swam into a pod of dolphins. Satrt the swim close to the pier, it’s a straight shot to the turn bouy, don’t forget to draft! The bike is deceptive…it appears that you’re going downhill, but are actually going up, the wind also picks up aroun 9 and is in your face coming back to town. I’ll be there to suffer with you…Aloha!

That’s the bad news, I love the pit. Sorts out the “runners”. :~))

Aloha,

Larry

You’ll still love the run. It will still go down that way but will go on the new Hokulia bypass road. I haven’t been down there for a while but will drive down in the next couple of days to check out where exactly the run goes. To run from The Pier, south on Ali’i Drive and back to the Keauhou Beach Hotel some portion of The Pit has to be done. I agree with you Larry…I loved The Pit…loved watching others get freaked out about it weeks before the race. I’ll let you know what I scout out.

Thanks, for all of the advice. Sorry for the delay. I was away from civilization for a few days.

How does the Pit compare the hills at Buffalo Springs, Can anybody compare.

Rusty

do they serve mai-tais on the run course?

Looking forward to drinking a couple the day after the race
.

So where are we KKT Slowtwitchers going to meet? I’ll bring a six-pack to the awards picnic!

I say we all meet the Kona Brewing company or somewhere not too far from the finish line. I really don’t want to have to do the post race triathlete shuffle too far. AT leats if you have ienough Kona brews the pain will get less intense with each passing swig.

Rusty

Train in the heat and pray for cloud cover on the run. This is a great course even with the changes! However, if you push to hard on the bike with no salt tabs the run can can be brutal! Plan to run with a hat and fill with it ice every aid station. Some great local Hawaii triathlete have been returned to mortal status on this course due to cramping, so have your nutrition in check.

Good luck and enjoy the dolphins on the swim!

Kona Brewing sounds good! But I have not drank beer for several weeks now, and I have the Honu Oly tri 2 weeks after KKT. Maybe I should train instead - nah!

Looking forward to my first KKT, and meeting any Slowtwitchers.

Been there, done that, (several times), you are crazy!

Just kidding about the crazy part, have fun. Be sure to ask if they have any ginger beer, it is ono.

Aloha,

Larry

Yeah someone should have a sign or flag or something at the luau and then we can meet/plan on meeting at the Kona Brewery or elsewhere that night. And take some pictures for KLM of course.

Larry,

My wife and I took our 4 daugthers to Kona Brewing in Hawaii Kai last week. My wife had the Lilikoi Beer and I beefed about not currently “doing beer”, so I did try the ginger beer. I has absolutely awesome. The ginger beer brew is also from the Big island. If they add some amino acids and electolytes I will consuider it a race fluid!

Are you doing Kalaeloa Tri this weekend?

Yes I am doing Kalaeloa, are you? I have never done it before. I hear the swim is short but rough, is that true? If doing it are you staying for the BBQ?

Yep, see you Sunday. I am staying for the BBQ too.

I have done it a few times - swim can be rough - rumored to have sharks too!

See you early Sunday morning!

hey, guessing this is the orange cannondale man, you were flying at the honolulu tri there. Doug said that it would make you happy if you knew I’ve moved over to the Cannondale camp with my new, ultra sweet and ultra light Ironman 5000. Anyways have a good one up there. And if you don’t have any idea what the hell I’m talking about sorry, my bad. Tai

Kalaeloa - swim’s a little rough, watch out diving in as I dove straight into a coral bed last year… Bike is fun with quite a few turns. The first stretch is a long super mild uphill (and I mean super mild) into a headwind. Get that out of the way and the rest is lots of twisting fun. Run isn’t too bad but it was damn hot last year. BBQ is pretty fun and the prizes are great (longboard and a bike!) So I’ll race (hey noone’s doing it maybe I’ll finally win a race!), eat a little, miss the surfboard drawing by one number too high, the bike by a number too low, and then kick in some keahou mileage afterwards. Just look over the bike course in advance, I got lost last year. See you guys out htere
