Kinlin rims, XR31 vs XC279 vs Flo 30 (Update: Flo 30's purchased, and are awesome)

Trying to nail down a set of rims for a new bike and I have narrowed the list two these two rims

Building on a Powertap GS hub front (24h) and a simple 20 hole front hub (probably a superlight hun from BHS)

The 279 is cheaper, a little heavier, 1mm narrower.
The Xr31 is 3mm deeper, a little lighter, 1mm wider, and has an option of an offset rear rim (3.0mm) but is nearly 60% more expensive.

Any one have direct experience with both rims?

I’ve been running 279’s for years. Solid rim.
I bought before the Flo 30’s were available… which I would probably use now.

I would go with them, but is appears they want to charge me over $100cdn to ship the rims. Which is ridiculous, costs the same price as a rim, and is twice the shipping charge of alternative retailers.

Uggh. Yeah, Flo shipping costs are high for Canadians.
The only other option I can think of is the Pacenti SL25.
Anyways, I like my 279’s.

Thanks for the help.
I am wondering if the Xr31 are worth the extra coin. Sounds like the 279 are a sure thing at the price.

They are probably quoting you $100 for UPS shipping.

Ask for a quote on Priority Mail.

i built up a xr31 last winter and like it quite a bit. only drawback is that it’s a royal pita to mount my tires (Conti GP4000)

$100? PM me your address if you don’t mind. I’d like to look into that.

Thanks,

Sent, Keep in mind I was converting to Canadian dollars.

If you’re ever going to run tubeless, the XR31 sets up easier and holds air better.

I also noticed the Flow 30’s are nearly 100g heavier than the Kinlin Xr31, so I would be giving up 200g. Are the flows that much more arrow for the weight penalty?

I couldn’t tell you, I’ve never seem data for the XR-31, but it’s just a basic V-shaped 31mm rim with straight brake tracks so in theory it’s somewhat slower than the Flo. I use them for general riding and training and race on deeper wheels so I’m less concerned with the aerodynamics on them.

I suspect the 570g listed for the Flo weight is wrong. First, it’s hard to understand where all the extra material would be compared with the XR-31 (which is already a pretty beefy rim). Second, that implies that the front hub and spokes are 155g all together, which seems way too light. I’d bet the rim actually weighs 470g and that webpage has a typo.

With sapim Cx-ray spokes and nipples the hub would be sub 50G. That is not very likely.

Maybe they will answer here.

I have confirmation from Flo that the rims are 570g.

Oh… well that makes a big difference right now. The exchange rate is terrible for Canadians.

What method of shipment do you use to Canada?

What method of shipment do you use to Canada?

USPS Priority International
.

A four pound package shipped via Priority Mail to Canada is $39.40.

Same volume? Shipping cost is more than just weight.

In the end I purchased a set of Flo 30 rims.

Very happy with them so far, the fit and finish is nice. When measuring the ERD they appear to be consistently round, and they sit very flat on my granite table, so I figure they should build up easy with even spoke tension.

The weight was interesting. The 20 hole front weighed in at 578g, the 2 hole rear was a feather weight (LOL) at 530g. Left me wishing I had two rims at the 530 weight so my wheel set would have been a hair under 1700g.

Anyway. Now I have to order the spokes and a front hub to build the set up with.

Thanks to the guys at Flo for helping with figuring out the shipping to Canada, and everyone here who advised these rims.
