Kinda OT...Q for the docs (kind of gross)

I have the flu - stomach flu, I’m pretty sure. It started yesterday at around 10am with my stomach “not feeling good” and then reared its ugly head when I had to run to the bathroom ~12x between 13:30 and when I left @ 16:30. Came home and did a world-class power hurl that would have gotten me on the podium for sure, had it been an Olympic event.

I have since spent the past 20hrs sleeping, either freezing or sweating like crazy, and getting up at regular intervals to visit my good friend Mr toilet.

Normally the human body is very good at separating waste products into “solid” and “liquid”, however when sick, there always seems to be a mix up and the liquids seem to think they’re solids. Why is this?

Could be food poisoning… I had similar several weeks ago. You’ll be fine in a few days (and the hurling and diahrea will go away in a day).

A friend of mine thought it might be that as well, but I was feeling “off” before lunch, and the freezing/sweats combined with the general achyness I’ve got all over makes me think flu. You gotta hate it when even your hair is sore!

It’s usually from something you ate a good 24 hours before symptoms surface.

Hmmm - that’s possible then (didn’t know that).

I’m still waiting for the ST doc’s to tell me why my liquids are being processed as solids though!

The Myth of the “Stomach Flu”

Many people use the term “stomach flu” to describe illnesses with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These symptoms can be caused by many different viruses, bacteria, or even parasites. While vomiting, diarrhea, and being nauseous or “sick to your stomach” can sometimes be related to the flu – particularly in children – these problems are rarely the main symptoms of influenza. The flu is a respiratory disease and not a stomach or intestinal disease.

“While vomiting, diarrhea, and being nauseous or “sick to your stomach” can sometimes be related to the flu – particularly in children – these problems are rarely the main symptoms of influenza.”

I recovered completely from salmonella poisoning about two weeks ago and my visits to the doctors had this same tone. My first doctors visit culminated in this advice, “You have a stomach virus, similar to the flu. Drink lots of sugary fluids, don’t eat solid food, and rest.” The second visit to a different doctor sounded like this, “Good God no, you have salmonella poisoning. Here are anti-biotics that are going to make your stomach feel even worse for a week, but you’ll be all better at the end of the treatment.”

My advice to Khai, GULP, don’t trust the doctor until he/she takes a stool sample. It’s nasty and unpleasant, but it’s the only way to be sure. If I had kept on the with the first doctors advice, I’d still be sick.
