Kidney Stones (4)

Anyone ever have these? I’m in uncharted territory and am terrified. The internet - as usual - isn’t really clear on what to expect.

I was in the hospital the day before yesterday and in - literally - the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. It was a crippling pain on my stomach and right flank that - literally - left me paralyzed. I couldn’t move. Sat in the ER for what seemed like an eternity (after “toughing it out” for 9 hours at home) and the best feeling in the world was when they gave me a morphine shot and it all went away.

Now I’m on percocet and still waiting to pass 2 stones (1/4" a piece). Is the pain going to come back when these things pass?

Also, I had a 40k time trial scheduled for this Saturday. I’m assuming that doing that is a bad idea if the stones haven’t passed? I’m REALLY itching to get my new bike in a race.

Once they pass … the pain goes away almost immediately.

I had one pass two years ago and was in excruciating pain. Went to the hospital and couldn’t even stand due to the pain. Eventually it got to the point I was throwing up, doubled over and in major pain.

Then a few minutes later … it passed, the pain went away and I walked out of the hospital less than 15 minutes later … went for a 40 mile ride that afternoon with no issues.

WEll, I was in that pain - but apparently my stones didn’t pass. So I’m still waiting for them to do that.

Let’s cross our fingers it happens in the next day or so then.

I had mine last summer. Unfortunately it takes awhile for the little bugger to get all the way through. And, while it is traversing from your kidney to your bladder it is excruciating. They tell you to drink more water to help move it along but it hurts like hell when it is moving. So in my case I didn’t always drink that much. So, it would seem to stop moving and I’d have a bit of relief but then the pain would return again when it moved.

It started shortly after bed time, I thought I could HTFU but got my wife up around 5:00 or so to drive me to Emerg. Half ways there I told her to pull over, I needed to lie down on the cold grass. She called an Ambulance and by the time the got there I was a bit better, rode to the hospital and they had me in a wheelchair waiting to be admitted to the ER, I then needed to lay down on the floor. Finally in and some Morphin and a bag of fluid and I was much better. Sent home with Percocet after doing an X-ray to confirm the 2 stones (1 still in the Kidney).

Took a couple of more days for it to pass. I was whiped after that.

I’ve broken bones and had other “incidents” but nothing else that hits the pain threshold of that.

mine showed up at work. I thought I was having a back cramp, and pushed on my back with my thumb, it instantly made me want to throw up! My mouth was watering and 10 minutes later I barfed.

I couldn’t get comfortable and my wife had to come and drive me to the hospital. it was a stone. Mine was small. Yours (sorry to say) sound huge!!! Are you sure they are 1/4 inch? DANG!

sorry.

I would drink a ton of water and hope for the best. maybe doing a TT might not hurt-since you are already going to be bent over!

Did the pain of actually passing them equal the pain you had on the way to the hospital? I’m terrified of what the pain I have upcoming is going to feel like.

DO NOT time-trial while taking percocet.

If you are asking if they hurt when you pee them out? The answer is no. The pain is when the stone moves from the kidney to the bladder. When you pee it out, you won’t feel it.

I’ve had four stones over ten years (most recently about two months ago), so I’ve become an expert. Follow up with a urologist - I just went through blood tests, cat scan and a 24 hour urine collection to guide dietary choices.

Ok. So all of my pain is in the rear view mirror then (from what I understand)? The “main pain” is when your stomach and right flank feels like it’s being torn out?

I have an appt with a eurologist next week (but i’m hoping it’s all well passed by that time).

My definition of “passing them” is the route from kidney to bladder. Once they are in your bladder you won’t feel anything abnormal when you pee them out. In my case they gave me a screen to pee through so I could “catch” the stone and know it was through.

So, that pain you feel where it feels like a combination of a prize fighter pummeling your kidney / back and a cat rakeing you from the inside is the one that eventually goes away leaving you feeling somewhat tired. Once you’ve been through that it doesn’t get any worse (until, I suppose the next time if the stone is larger :)).

Drink lots, take pain meds, scream at spouse and blame her.

—> I always described it as being stabbed with a dagger and then it being twisted. And mine was always left kidney. But however you want to describe it is fine with me.

I was actually giving a presentation for my last one during the Timex Multisport Team Launch in February. Joe Umphenour was asking me a bunch of questions as the pain hit. I answered questions for about ten minutes - mostly short yes or no answers to hide the pain. Then bolted as soon as I could to the ER for an IV and Morphine, Torredol and Dilaudid.

As soon as I passed it, I was on bus to watch the Milrose Games.

Don,

Best news I’ve heard all day.

I have the little screen to catch it.

I was scared to death that the pain I already felt was nothing compared to the stone coming out of my pee hole. I’ve been going to the toilet with an absurd amount of trepidation. lol

That’s a relief.

Hopefully I pee this thing out soon (I’m assuming that I’ve already passed it through because of the pain I was in). I’m not a big fan of taking pain meds.

The pain occurs when the stone passes through the ureter - from the kidney to the bladder. Once the stone is in the bladder you won’t feel any more pain. Even when passing through the penis. Apparently, that tube has a much larger diameter than the ureter.

If you have been pain free for an hour or so, then it is likely the stone is in your bladder and your pain is over. You will be generally fatigued but you should be able to go about normal activities, including working out.

From now on, drink more water.

I had my first and only stone a couple of months ago and it was horrific. Morphine is my new best friend. If I owned a gun and one bullet, I wouldn’t be here today.

As others have posted, once the pain subsides you are good. Unless of course you get a bladder infection - that’s a whole other experience where you don’t want to pee but have to, every 15 minutes or so and every time you do it hurts. But that’s a different topic.

Had mine last year. Got on a train at 0600 fit and feeling good, two minutes later I’m on the floor sweating like a pig in the worst pain ever. Had the sense not to pull the emergency stop cord between stations as that would have made things worse. Funny thing several other people in the carriage see a grown man in a suite rolling on the floor in pain and just look away reading their papers!!

Dragged myself off at next station and paramedics arrive. 3 shots of morphine in the ambulance and still killing me. Get to A&E and suddenly pain all gone, stone passed.

ive had them twice!

first time was camping on the beach and woke up in pain took over an hour to get to the hospital that time.

second time was at work and only 10 minutes from the hospital.

both times i had them i had intermittent pain for a few days. but percocet was my best friend during that.

something no one has mentioned yet is that for the next several months any time you have the slightest pain in your back you will be terrified that they are back…

good luck!

I’ve had them a few times. I’ll spare you the details but the first time they had to put a stent in between my kidney and bladder because I couldn’t pass them. Out the pee hole is no problem as other’s have said. Once you get them out, make sure the Dr tests what type they were. Most are due to a calcium processing problem but there are others. Once you know that, you can address the issue. Once they pass you’ll feel like a million bucks again.

Ok…so just so I’m clear here:

The pain I’ve ALREADY GONE THROUGH is the stone “passing”, right? I SHOULD be in the clear from here on out until I pee this thing out?

Yup, unless of course there is another one in there waiting to come out. Which is not uncommon.

Hopefully there isn’t. I don’t need anything else to worry about.
