Kidney stone in transit - it's kicking my ass

My first - (6mm) some really bad times - good thing I don’t have a loaded weapon on site.
Funny thing is most of the day there’s not a lot of pain, but adding up to a couple hours a day, it hits full 10 on the scale.
5mg oxy doesn’t do too much.
What works best is ‘pain management’. If pain is a 10, try to get to a 9, etc. Using massage, mindfulness, changing positions.

Ouch ouch ouch.
What other analgesics are you taking??
Disclaimer: MD here…

I’ve had my share of kidney stones. Have had ureteroscopic (sp) surgery for one.

Pain meds help. For me, meditation helps more. But that’s a lot of just living with and experiencing the pain.

Pain somewhere else helps. I don’t recommend that. But I noticed that a hot water bottle helped, more than a hot shower. I ended up burning myself with the hot water bottle, but I also focused a bit less on the kidney stone pain.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Seriously sorry. Please take care.

Hope you get relief soon

Ouch, I hope it passes soon.

Sorry dude. Never had one but I have an idea of how bad they are. They are probably worse than my idea.

If it makes you feel any better I am around a 6-7 all day since my surgery on Friday. Misery loves company.

25 years in medicine and the worst pain I’ve ever seen a man in was a result of a kidney stone in transit. Called 911, fetal position curled up on the doormat of his front porch wailing for us. Totally normal functioning adult with wife and kids, no other health problems. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Well, maybe two people I can think of off the top of my head. The OP is not one of them.

can confirm, awful. mine both passed after about four hours, instant relief

you’re reminding me to drink more water, hope your day is much better today

Been there once (and hopefully only time).

Didn’t know what the pain was from, and went to the ER in the middle of the night.

I wouldn’t wish that kind of pain on anyone.

Good luck with that.

flomax and nsaids should be helpful as well. They say it is the closest a man can get to having a baby

If it’s me, ketamine infusion until it passes.

Good luck

If they will keep you in hospital that would be great. I imagine being in the 17th century with a kidney stone or bladder stone that wouldn’t pass. Yikes

I still think about that Al Fucking Swearingen scene in Deadwood, where he’s trying to pass astone…that was just awefull depiction.

Brutal! I’ve not had one but my wife has.

Have you tried MMJ? My wife found it to make things tolerable with an underpinning of pleasant. Still painful - but it was in the background.

Worst pain of my life.

Happened at night, could not decide if I should call an ambulance or if we could make it to the Hospital. Being cheap figured we could stop side of road to pee, or just pee my pants. Good news made it there with no accident.

Pain reliever, pushed in. Dr. said this might make you nauseous, let me know I have this drug I’ll push if it does. Injects first drug, pretty quick relief, followed by this large wave of oh shit im gonna puke, said something, he pushes the other drug the wave subsided.

FYI-- I later was getting an ultrasound for something, and my kidney stone came up. the Tech was a women and side, well I have given birth and had a kidney stone, the kidney stone was more painful.

For a while after, if someone asked me on a scale of 1 - 10 how was this pain (for whatever I was having) I would say, before or after kidney stone, cause I found a whole new level of 10 with that. I give a lot more 5 and 6s now.

Never had one. Where does the pain originate?

Toradol is your friend trust me. For some reason it works better than narcotics. The works as good as the shot.

Mine was lower back, right side. Not surprisingly, near a kidney.

Not knowing what it was, I thought it was just a muscle strain. Then as pain ramped up over time, I knew that couldn’t be it. There was nothing that would ease the pain.

I thought that it must have been an undetected tumor that had now grown so large that my end was near! At the ER, the receptionist seemed have a “Meh, it’s likely a kidney stone” response and triaged me accordingly.

It depends.

I’ve had two. My senior year of college I had one stuck between my right kidney and my bladder for ~3 weeks. So insane back pain, and the feeling of needing to pee constantly even though I was empty. Had surgery the day before a studio final.

Second was 2019. That one just kinda was there. Oxy worked. Ended up hanging out in my bladder for a few days then passed it while taking the last of the oxy. Pain was either in lower back or between belly button and pelvis.
