Keytone Esters

On TheMove, Lance claimed that most of the peloton was taking Keytone Esters. Do they work and what is the science behind them (in layman’s terms)? Does anyone use them during triathlons? If so, when? I hear they taste awful.

I understand they are expensive, so I am not really interested in hearing the value judgements. I am just trying to understand what they are, if they work, and how they are used.

The way he made it sound, I thought some of the riders do it, and only as a last resort if they’re really in a bad spot during a stage. I could be totally wrong, but I had the same thought as you.

They’re spelled ketone esters. They have come up on this forum before, in 2017 and in May 2019. The 2019 thread has some good information in it about what these are and what they do in an athletic context.

Yea… I realized that shortly after posting. The misspelling is also why my search did not yield any results

You should check out HVMN’s website and read their claims. $33/serving, minimum is 3 bottles. The claim is 2-3% gains from my understanding.

I started racing with HVMN this season in my last two 70.3 races. I can tell you I don’t feel a difference, but I’ve had some good results so I’ll give it a try again. I took it 30 minutes before the swim and then about halfway through the bike ride. Tastes like shit, but just drink water after. So expensive too. Just my 2 cents

Does it taste like acetone?

Not sure I know the taste of acetone, but from my experience it just tastes like a bad shot of liquor at a bar. A bit hard to unscrew/drink on the bike as well. Not sure how long the effects are supposed to last. Looking to try it out at my full IRONMAN this fall.

If you want to know more about ketone esters, you should listen to Joe Rogan podcast with guest Dom D’Agostino.
podcast link here

“Dom D’Agostino, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, and a senior research scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). He was also recently a crew member of the NASA NEEMO 22 project.”

He (Dom D’Agostino) is/was working on developing and testing (if i remember right) some of the ketone esters. So you might find out which esters taste the best or are at least better in taste, etc.

And another Joe Rogan podcast with Peter Attia. They talk about keto diet, fasting etc.

“Peter Attia is the founder of Attia Medical, PC, a medical practice with offices in San Diego and New York City, focusing on the applied science of longevity.”

And Ben Greenfield podcast with Dominic D’Agostino. Which might be more focused on Ketone Salts vs. Ketone Esters, compared to Joe Rogan podcast

Main reason to consume ketone ester is to get in ketosis faster, compared to fasting and keto diet. And when you’re in ketosis, your body will use fat as main source of energy.

So main reason for some athletes to be on keto diet is to consume less food during race, since your body is getting energy from your stored and consumed fat. So less food, less or no problems with stomach ache (caused by all the energy drinks and gels etc.) during race.
