Ketosis reversing degenerative disc disease?

I have read a little about ketosis reversing degenerative disc disease. But am not finding much material.

I am signed up for ironman at the end of the year but not sure if things will hold up.

thx

I don’t have any references for this, but I have recently (about 2 months ago) gone low-carb in an attempt to help a chronic inflammatory condition of my knee. I feel that the condition I’ve had for the last 11 months is just about better, and I feel that the diet has been a large part of it.

My feeling is its worth a try.

Do you have degenerative disc disease and, if so, what does your doctor say about managing it? Very likely a much better source for health/nutrition advice than biblelife.org.

Maybe? Inflammation is part of the repair process of your body. Starve your body and repair is going to slow down due to a lack of energy.

Too many carbs are “bad” carbs from processed foods, gluten, etc.

Removing these from your diet will help in general and could help the inflammation as they will cause trouble for many people.

If it comes in a wrapper, then there’s a good chance it should be avoided.

Do you know whether your markers for inflammation are high? The first step might be to get your C reactive protein level measured. Mine was chronically high, and yes I have progressive degenerative osteoarthritis. The worst part is the little osteo spur things on your lower lumbar facets. Painful!

I do a Paleo thing but no fruit, which is basically low carb, I suppose, but without the cheese. I feel better now than I have in a very long time, and my CrP levels are low-normal now. I’ve also lost 120 pounds and counting, so that’s not a bad thing, too. Cutting out alcohol is also beneficial, but not always easy. You’re not going to get into ketosis when you drink alcohol. For some people (me included) artificial sweeteners can also kill ketosis, as can caffeine.

Good luck to you at your race!

No. Talk to a dr. And stay off biblelife.org. for starters they can’t even manage with citations for the nonsense. And yes, the claims are nonsense.

Stay away from ketosis unlsss you have a legitimate medical reason that your md determined.

What? What? Reversing degenerative disc disease? Have it. L3 to 5, somewhere around there. Two MRI’s confirm that as well as stenosis of the S1 nerve. Now that I’ve abandoned my races this year, and the lifestyle for the most part, my diet has gone south. With that has come a return of the back issues.

I don’t want to derail your topic, but ketosis is a condition that was recommended for me in the book “Eat Right For Your Blood Type”. I know, you can poo poo his findings about blood types, but the food choices for my blood type are spot on. When I maintain that diet, I feel much better overall including the back issues.
Thanks for bringing this up. Time for some research for me as well!
