Given the weather conditions and the number of races going on, I thought I would start a thread to help us South Floridians stay on top of any weather-related cancellations this weekend.
I got an email this morning saying that the Speedo Swim Miami 1 mi, 5k, and K-9 Krawl on Key Biscayne are all still a go for Saturday morning. Updates will be posted to the website: http://www.miamisportsinternational.com/feature.php
I live pretty close to the Key and Bayshore Drive and would be happy to update anyone on the road conditions, if necessary.
I rode last night and had a great tailwind going down to the village. Coming back - not so good! I’m sure by this afternoon there will be a decent amount of flooding and debris…
I am off work at noon, so I will be riding this afternoon. from a friend who rode this morning i hear the way into the key makes you feel like Lance. No chain + effortless 25+ mph
Last night, before it even was very windy, I was holding 24.5 mph very easily once I got over Bear Cut. Alas, that is as close to Lance as I will ever get. Coming over the causeway was really windy, and I was getting pushed around a good bit by the gusts. Kind of scary… Be careful!
I am waiting for them to send us home, but I think we will be lucky to have Friday off…
It rained some overnight but was OK this morning when I was running except for a few sprinkles. But, since I’ve been at work, we’re definitely getting bands of rain. I’m on the 8th floor and have seen the edges of a few bands as they’ve come through. It’s been raining here (South Miami) non-stop since about 9:30 am with periods of heavy rain as the bands move through.
yup it is but nothing serious yet. I am in downtown Miami and it is a constant drizzle. May not be able to ride this pm. will settle for a run in the rain…
Miami79- any word on the sunday race? also have evac orders been issued for Dade county? Only thing I’ve heard on this is voluntary evac in broward.
Good info. My wife is supposed to fly from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale tomorrow to teach a class at Nova Southeastern. I guess the school cancelled classes tomorrow, but may be open on Saturday. She’s going to fly out anyway with the hopes of getting stuck in Atlanta (so she can visit her sister).
Can I start a rumor on the Rumor Control thread? =)
I heard that Ft. Lauderdale airport is closed…
No evac orders here yet except, I think, an order for people in low-lying areas, barrier islands, and trailer parks and people with special needs. I live in the next evac zone, which is east of US1, but “mandatory” is somewhat left up to interpretation… They did change the cycle of NOAA updates, and the next one will be a 1pm and another at 3pm.
I woke up to go for a ride on the key this morning but it was raining hard down here so I gaffed it off, Im gonna hit the gym instead
I think Katrina is just going to be a big rain maker, the worst is going to be north of us, but hey just leave your car at work and swim home, I just left the grove and the streets are getting pretty flooded.
A bunch of people here already begged to go home and put their shutters up, so I figure anything I accomplish here is more than what they are doing.
I agree. It’s just going to be a bunch of rain and some wind. But, that little storm we had in July took my power out for 13 hours… I had to eat a lot of ice cream.
I’ll let you know how the Grove looks when I get home. 99.9% sure that Bayshore is flooded in front of Kennedy Park.
You can try taking Tigertail to avoid the Kennedy Park section of Bayshore. From Bayshore, go up SW 27th and turn right at the first light. Go straight about 1.5 miles until you get to Shore Drive S. Make a right. This turns into Shore Dr. E as it curves around. Make a right at Samana. This will dump you out on Bayshore at a light near Viscaya. The light is pressure-activated though, so it can be hard to cross traffic to get onto Bayshore. Traffic is much lighter this way, too.
I fervently hope it passes through quickly. Over the last year, in preparation for our first IM, my partner and I have signed up for a total of three OW swims of IM distance or longer. The previous two were both cancelled at the last minute because of weather. Now we’re getting ready to drive down for the Miami 5K. If this one is cancelled too…well, the pattern should be pretty obvious: we’re signed up for IMFL in November, so if you’re racing there you don’t need to bother with any swim training.
