Kask Bambino TT Helmet

i bought one on the back of wind tunnel reviews - how else are you meant to choose ?

i actually sold my LG -PG 09 , i ride with my head down a lot

Looking at getting a Kask Bambino Helmet
What are you thoughts, do you like it?
Any issues with magnets on visor?

I’d do 2 things straight away (might need to do this with the new ones, not sure) - 1) Get a large-ish drill bit 8-10mm and stick a row of holes in the top of the visor - this solved all fogging for me and you can position the holes above eye-line so no adverse effects of wind coming through into your eyes (this is actually really easy: masking tape across the top, mark the spots to drill, ctr punch and pilot with a 4mm then you are good to go.) You probably don’t need too many to stop it fogging. Anti fog for me didn’t work well. 2) Measure the magnets on the visor (4 or 5mm dia I think but not sure) and order some more of the same size from an online magnet dealer (these are very cheap - have a google.) Get some super glue and stick an extra magnet on top of each of the magnets on the visor (With the polarity of the magnets the correct way round.) This completely solved all visor issues for me. However be careful with the glue and don’t get it on the rest of the visor.

Did you have your helmet on your head while drilling holes, or you placed it on someone else head? I think anyone with a bit of brain and understanding how internet marketing works, would stay away from this piece of crap. There is not one, but few confirmed issues by many people all over. Just because it is expensive and has great paid reviews doesn’t mean is good. Buying helmet with visor then racing without one, best advice I have ever heard.

This helmet cost what high end motorcycle helmet costs.

RRP is irrelevant if you are selling it after use, the Kask worked out a very cheap test for me. ‘Many’ confirmed issues compared to what? Most cycling products I buy I find flaws with, the Kask didn’t particularly bother me more than any other cycling purchase I’ve made.

Would you advise I steer clear of internet marketing and instead follow the opinions of a small sample of people on the internet? Or would it perhaps be best to disregard both, and try things out for myself so I can use real data to compare?

I just got back from a tunnel camp where 4 or 5 people tested the Kask. It was good/ok on most people, but was only really best on the one person who drops his head a lot. Ya it is a small sample size, but I would guess that it would be between good and OK on most people, but probably rarely the best.

The surprise was the P-09. It was either good or bad and the eyeball wind tunnel wasn’t helpful at all.

P09 didn’t test that great for bike radar 2 years ago FWIW
.

Good to know much appreciated

What tested well generally ?

This stuff is guess work to some extent , thx !

aero helmets are like t shirts. If you’re not going to test just get the one that matches your kit, looks the best, helps you meet girls/guys, makes you feel fast.

Like someone said, the aero eyeball is pretty unreliable.

The usual suspects were pretty good. Selector and Advantage, but you need to hold your position and don’t look down and put the tail in the air (no surprise there).

This is probably all a waste of time if the new super secret Giro is as good as it looks. I Chunged and roll-down tested the wee out of the new Specialized, but didn’t find it to be particularly good on me.

Is that the super secret Giro the pros have been using for a couple years? It must be good if they won’t sell them to regular people…

You are making me feel better about the old (and now heavily modified) Selector I picked up. It looks aero and chicks dig it…

Not necessarily true.

I test all my t-shirts using focus groups to know if they’re good or not

Everyone should read your comment twice: without testing it’s a guess.

I was in the tunnel last month and surprisingly, the Bambino and Javelin tested almost identical for my position. Would not have guesed two very different lids would be that close but like you said: “looks” and “guess” don’t mean a lot.

Hello Carl Spackler and All,

What were your preferences for helmets … and why?

What were the best things you learned?

Any other thoughts or wisdom from the tunnel?

.

I was very surprised that Bambino and Javelin were so close. I sit very still–all of my runs were within 50 grams–and the difference between those two lids was within that range. A lot of that is due to head position.

Most insightful was the nearly 6 hours of fit work done before, broken up by weeks, when I’d ride to get accustomed to position changes. I had the added issue of a hip injury that kept muscles from firing properly under load. Once that was addressed and I had something to build on then aero considerations came into it. When we finally went into tunnel it was a matter of fine-tuning front end–went a little lower and narrower on pads–and testing helmets. So the bulk of the work was done before even going in there, which is worth noting. I think it’s easy to get hung up on a hero cda when going into tunnel.

Well I’ve bought velcro and magnets for the visor and some gorilla tape to secure the velcro straps - f**king ridiculous, but this is what happens when you read glowing reviews and buy blind off the internet…

OK wore it for the first time in a sprint and it went OK, no issues with the velcro or fogging. P*ssed around for 30s getting the visor on, but I’ve figured with a bit of practise I can do this without wasting any time. Felt very comfy.

I love my Bambino! Super comfortable and seems to work really well in all conditions. With my previous helmet (Rudy Wingspan), I felt like I had to keep my head still or the tail would get whipped by the wind; not with the Bambino.

I keep the visor upside down with the magnets and then as I’m running out of transition, switch it around. Makes it easy to get the helmet on and keeping the visor in place.

Have they upgraded the visor? I noticed someone today in a race had a visor with black plastic clips where I have small metallic buttons for the magnets.

what look like clips are actually little magnets. The older style button magnets, from all accounts, werent very good? I have the latest bambino pro and the magnets are good, visor doesnt go anywhere. The update to to the straps on the inside which are tightened and loosened with the round ratchet style adjustment at the rear like the rest of kasks line of roadies is good too.

Do you know if the new visor will fit on the old Bambino helmet?

no i dont think so, they are a squarish type of fit and fit in snug
