Karen is clearly one of the greatest triathletes of all time. You will not meet a nicer and more caring person. As for beer drinking, no triathlete can come close to what she can put down!
This breed of athlete no longer exits. She’s won Hawaii, and won the ITU Draft Legal world’s (Cancun 95) in the same year (a week or two apart to boot), and as the folks say, can put back the beer and fries. I had the chance to meet her at ITU World’s 94 in Wellington and she insisted on spending more time hearing about my age group race in the middle of the hoards then talking about her event at the pointy end of the Womens’ field. What is more incredible is while athletes much younger have come, burnt out and gone, she keeps grinding away at or near the top. Very impressive. We need more champions like this.
