So, who is going to participate in Kansas 70.3 this weekend?
For those of you who have done this race in the past what can I expect?
One of the Timex Ford Flex should be there this weekend. I picked up the 3:00 to 4:00 shift. If you’re at the race site during this time come on over and check it out.
I’m in. However, not necessarily as excited about it as I was hoping I’d be. Just been swamped with work therefore making the training more of a burden than it’s usual relief. I wanted to beat my time from last year (as is always the goals from year to year, right?), but now I’m focused on getting through without a complete meltdown.
It’s going to be hot. It’s already getting pretty hot around here this week and Sunday is supposed to be close to 90 degrees. Make sure you drink a lot of beer the night before to hydrate.
Overall it’ll be a great race with good turnout from the pro’s.
You also better put in prayer to the “Wind Gods” that they take a nap while we are on the bike course. There are a lot of rolling hills and with a lot of wind this course can be pretty tough.
Last year we got really lucky with the weather, atleast for the bike portion. It was overcast, cool and no wind.
I would not expect that this year, weather.com has the high on Saturday at 95 and on Sunday the high is 86.
I am racing and I plan to beat my overall time from last year, the big question will be on the bike and that will depend on the weather/wind.
It’s supposed be hot, and while I’ll physically bring my wetsuit when I drive out on Friday I don’t think theres a chance that I’m going to get to use it.
As for the course itself, two seperate transitions, bike course has 2 turn arounds, way more hills than you’d expect given the stereotypes of Kansas, including a pretty decent grinder back up to the dam at around mile 50(?) that is going to eat stupid people who charged out of T1 alive I think. Run course is pretty straightforward, multiple laps.
I live in Wisconsin and did the IMoo bike course last weekend. Anyone know how the Kansas bike course compares to the Wisconsin “loop” portion of the bike?
A teammate who has raced both with great success told me he felt the KS course is harder than 1-lap of the IMWI course, but he didn’t seem empathaticly convinced about it either way. I agree with cam2win, if you have been training on the IMWI course I think you’ll be adequately prepared.
I haven’t raced KS before, but I did ride the bike course a month or two back. All I can say is that it seemed a blast right up through the first turn around but started to catch up with me by the second. From the second to the finish was not enjoyable, but I’m hoping for a different experience employing an actual pacing/nutrition/hydration strategy instead of just dicking around like the last time I was on the course.
Rode the course last weekend. Lots of rollers and nowhere to hide from the wind. From regular wind pattens it should be headwind for the first 20-21 miles to the first turnaround. Tailwind to the next out and back then tailwind for the last 15. Last 15 is pretty flat too except for the grind back up to the dam.
I was suprised at the couple hills on the “flat” run. The run is basically 3 out and backs done twice. The first two out and backs have some nice hills near the turn around. Especially the first one that has a nice valley. So you go down and up out, then down and up coming back. Don’t get me wrong, its not the Rocky’s. But kept hearing flat. I thought all flat. There will be some walkers there.
Should be a fun race.
Hopefully it wont get too hot. I think the high temps the days leading up will scare everyone. But the forecast says 10 degrees cooler on race day.
the wisconsin hills seem more rolling and nonstop. the kansas hills are more sustainable and longer, but with more flat sections. i feel the wisconsin hill loop is harder terrain, but the wind and humidity will be the xfactor on the kansas course.
I’ve done both, pretty much the same though KS does have a few more flat sections. I did MOO in 2006 (50’s and rain) so it seemed harder than KS last year. N=1
what wheels should I run in KS. My race wheels are Hed Jet 9 but if it is too windy I may run my training wheels. Anybody heard what the wind is suppose to do?
