I really enjoyed the Sub7/8 project culminating in watching the entire event from start to finish on the day.
Having met Joe Skipper and trained along side him (OK behind him, in the same swim squad etc) for a few months at one point, I have followed pretty closely all his various results and non triathlon racing etc he has been doing (like the 12 hour TT UK record).
He is such a great guy in person, funny as anything, but just really really genuine, no ego and not afraid to push himself super hard.
For me his time etc was the standout performance of the day. Given he had a rough time with COVID close to the race date, and that it was only a week or so out that he took over the spot from originally being a bike pacer for Ali and then he could finish so close to K, that is just an amazing effort and speaks to the massive engine that he has. If they had time to practice the swim drafting and for him to have some proper swim focus leading into the race then the time differential between the two of them would have been even tighter than it was.
My main criticism of the event was that it was a race with a male and female winner, as opposed to the focus being on going sub 7 and sub 8. I am not saying this in a “woke” fashion and that everyone should get a participation ribbon, but they all really deserved pretty much equal recognition for what they all achieved on the day and saying there was a winner as detracts somewhat from the fantastic results achieved by all 4 of them.
So I just want to send out some “love” and recognition for Joe and what he managed to achieve on such short notice.
Watching what he did was amazing
I became a fan
.
I didn’t think he could go sub 7 given the short notice and recent illness. And kind of had him marked as a step below the top group of guys (ie not a major podium threat in an IM Kona/WC). I’ll fully admit I was wrong. he had an impressive performance (I didn’t actually watch it but based on the results) and I’ll be interested to see him at Kona this year.
He’s very honest when it comes to training and racing, including his shortcomings. It comes across as brash to some but that just seems to be the way he is.
He said on the post race podcast that he knew his swim was dreadful and would have liked ore time to practice drafting. If he’d been a few minutes faster in the water the ending have been very interesting.
I posted on another thread the deboer founder claims that wetsuit Blu used is worth 10mins over a 3.8km swim to someone doing 1:45/100. I don’t think Skipper had a super suit, so if deboer are to be believed then the distance on the swim might have been wiped out if he’d had a one. If he’d got within 1-2mins of him that means a sprint finish.
Really looking forward to seeing what he can do at Kona this year.

I think that brashness is just part of his humour and typical in some ways to how humour from Australia vs the UK vs the USA can be quite different. I thought their video series they did leaving into St George was great, a lot of fun etc. Just not everyone will get or appreciate the humour.

Yeah,he is so much like every other Pommie bastard mate of mine with a sense of humour that is often lost on Americans and Canadians.
Joe has had some great results over the last year and the lack of respect here for him here on ST has always mystified me.

where do you see a lack of respect? My impression of ST’s view of him is that he is super strong and when things go well he is a solid contender for podiums. And that is about right given that he is yet to beat the KBs, Frodos or Idens of the sport. What are you seeing that suggests a lack of respect?
I loved the quote where Dowsett expressed concern pre-race about the bike pace with a marathon to follow and Skipper told the team to just smash the bike and let him worry about the marathon.
Yeah, what a legend!
Wasnt he in the middle of a race when he was told he would do the whole thing instead of the bike?
“Hey the guy you were bike pacing for the world record cant make it, its going to be you next week on this against against the current world champion/world record holder/gold medalist…by the way he thinks you will walk the marathon…bring extra gels!”
…“ok!”
Totally delivered, that took some serious snickers!
Plus making quality content on the Triathlon Mockery channel.
Chapeau!

I’ve never seen any disrespect for Skipper on here. As well, I’m a Canadian living in the US and appreciate his sense of humor. I’m a big fan of the Triathlon Mockery Podcast. I have no idea where get the idea that Americans or Canadians don’t embrace his humor. It’s simply not true. If you have an issue with Americans and Canadians you need to get over it. Nobody is disrepsecting Skipper.

It may have been a poor choice of words by the person who said that, you can interpret respect in a number of ways.
As the OP, I just felt like it was time we showed a bit of love towards Joe, I think many of us were probably far more impressed at his effort, and that he was so close to K, than K actually beating him by a few mins and “winningâ€. They both blew sub 7 (and the ladies sun 8) out of the water!
Joe was cancelled and mentions of him were shadow banned on ST forums after he didn’t let Ben Hoffman catch him in IM Florida 2019, despite the fact that the American recorded what was then the fastest marathon in triathlon ever (2:36:08). Hoff had to make do with 2nd. The glory was stolen.
No, seriously, there is no lack of respect.
The Triathlon Mockery content is excellent. I thought it was very interesting in the post race podcast when Joe asked KB what they do for fun in their downtime when in training camp - “Do you watch Netflix together?” and KB looked genuinely confused, like he had never considered the idea of having downtime. He just goes back to his room and rests to get ready for the next day’s workout. I really think it highlighted what it takes to be Jan/KB/Iden and it will be interesting if it forces Joe/Lionel/Sam to up their focus to compete at that level. Just eat/sleep/train/repeat.
I also liked KB’s “I think I could run 2:20”, like Joe, you were close, but I had plenty in reserve if I’d needed it.
For all the money being thrown around by PTO and other private investors, I think it’s really the athlete’s own content that has been so interesting and engaging and has me excited for the rest of the race season.
It deifnitely makes me wonder what Kona is going to look like and the dynamics that will play out. Chances are KB will not come out of the water with Jan, so he’ll be playing catchup and might actually end up packing up with Joe to make a push toward the front pack. Scary part is Kristian has certainly proven that his run is no joke (2:35 Cozumel, 2:38 St. George, 2:30 sub 7/sub 8). Kona is going to be wild or a complete blowout by this guy who continues to dominate.
Adding Jan and AB swim firepower to the Kyle Smith, Currie, Florian gang could be interesting.
Is Wurf qualified for Kona already?

Somebody is a little triggered aren’t they, perhaps you should follow your own advice, the advice you wrote in the “Lionel is hiring a training partner” thread, where you wrote… “I really wish people wouldn’t get so defensive on here. Everyone has a right to state an opinion and some of them are fact based.”

where do you put laura phillipp in the missing appreciation table. the girl set effectively a new world best time and not even a thread here. i guess chances are good that hamburg is about 6 to 8 min slower than roth.

Exactly, the very fact that you titled this thread how you did shows we were thinking along “similar” lines.Joe is flavour of the month here right now but before his podcast was discovered and before this year he was what we call in Oz an “also ran”, someone who was in the race but nobody really talked about.Hell even when he beat Lionel all anyone here really wanted to talk about was Lionel coming second, again. There have been countless posts over the last few years wondering where is the love for Joe or at least why is he left out of so many conversations concerning the top tier Ironman champ’s.
On a forum where it is has been the Lionel and Sam show for the last couple of years even the Norwegians were relegated to the guest lounge until they started beating the shit out of everyone in the back half of last year.Joe isn’t the only Brit to be left off the ST party list, as there was comparatively little love for Tim Don (until he wore his post crash Halo) and David McNamee in his Kona podium days.

It is in the same lane.I remember thinking this past weekend about her amazing day " What a shitty day to be posting the best Ironman (M-Dot) performance ever". I knew she would be overshadowed by the SUB8 performances. There is an article on the ST main page but as we know, few people on the forum read stuff there.
Kevin MacKinnon wrote an article on that very topic.
Which was more impressive? Kat Matthews’ sub-8 or Laura Philipp’s 8:18? - Triathlon Magazine Canada
I remember being so impressed by her race in Finland last year and have been a fan ever since.Kona will be epic in the womens race.

Don’t think Wurf is as that was one reason he did St.G, he knew it would roll down a good way.
