Just had a tonsillectomy

Just wondering if anyone out there in their late 20’s 30’s have had a tonsillectomy recently and if so how long were you out of commission
.

no idea. get well quick!

Not entirely relevant, since I had my tonsils removed when I was about 10, but I was up and about in a couple of days. Could have been even sooner than that really. It was just like having a sore throat for a couple of days, and swallowing and talking were difficult. Other than that, I just milked it to get out of having to do anything.

Hope you get well soon!

I had one when I was 26. It was pretty painful for a few days. Worst was days 2-4 or so. Then it got better and I was 100% (or close to) after 6-7 days.
Good excuse to sit home and eat ice cream all day

Ugh. I had one when I was a kid. I don’t know about the adult ones. Best of luck with that though- I hope you feel better soon.

I had mine out a couple years ago (I was 21) and was out for a good two weeks. Didn’t feel bad while I was on pain killers, but weaning off them was pretty painful. Yawning will suck for a couple weeks.

Delayed response --hope you’re feeling better now. I had mine out in April at 30. I was out of commission for about 4 days, electing only to venture to the mailbox, and feeling pretty woozy on the way back up the stairs to my apt. I think I was abnormally sensitive to the anaesthetics. The second week I ramped up to walking around the neighborhood and soft pedaling on my trainer, but nothing strenuous. I really wanted to ride the IMOO course with a group 12 days after surgery, but my Dr. told me, and I think your doctor will probably tell you that around day 10 you’re at extreme risk of sutures popping and other unpleasant things tantamount to blood clots. So really, don’t get your heart rate up for 2 weeks after surgery. I wasn’t even supposed to leave town. It’s a pain, I know, but once you recover, you’ll never have to deal with being sick again. Heal fast, heal right, you’ll be up an running soon enough!

How much weight loss would that give you? Probably comparable to switching from aluminum to carbon components.

I had strep throat pretty much chronically for about a year in college so I had mine out at 20 and was miserable for 4 or 5 days. As said before, yawning really sucks for a while. But, I haven’t had strep throat and only 2 or 3 ear infections since, and it has been a long time between 20 yo and now

I had my tonsills removed in Nov 06 at 41 years old. When I spoke to the Dr afterwoods he had said to me that he had never had an adult patient return to work in less than 3 weeks . I wasn’t able to train for about 5 weeks (and for the first 3 weeks was in a lot of pain, like severe tonsilits but only much more pain full, painkillers for the whoel time, which was according to the Dr totally normal).

When I did begin to train I had to limit myself to low hr nothing over 130hr for a couple of weeks. Was a slow process, and frustrating as this was over the Australian tri season. The one plus was that I lost 7kgs as I couldn’t eat for over 2 weeks.

Net result has been one sore throat since, and slowly recovering immunity level. (previous to surgery I had sufferred 5 to cases of tonsilitis a year which became worse and worse

I had mine out when I was 30. The first 2-3 days were fine. Day 4-5 the pain kicked in just like my ENT said it would and I was really tired. The pain meds made me barf which was no good. I was also miserably constipated from the pain meds. How do people get hooked on that crap? I went back to work in a week and a half, but probably could have gone back after a week.

My brother had it done in his early twenties, was totally out of commission for about 4 days, and fully recovered after 1 week. The pain will suck, but as one of the previous posters said it’s the best excuse to eat ice-cream all day long. Look for the positive in the negative, keeping in mind that it’s off-season, that many pro triathletes take a break and do nothing around this time of year, and that you’ll be chipper again in no time anyway. Good luck and best wishes!
