Just bought the bike....now need helmet!

Been a LONG time since I bought a road helmet. Are there 2014 models still out there for a discount? Really no clue what to search for, etc. At all…

A race is October, IM distance.

Thanks for any help.

Forgot to add… I really am not interested in dropping $300 on a helmet.

So are you after a road helmet or a TT helmet… ?

If road, suggest looking at

Giro Synthe, Specialized Evade, and LG corse… whichever is the best fitting… all are quicker than standard road helmets… all ventilate well enough…

If its TT helmet, aside from fit the “best” one iei fastest will hugely depend on your bike position… how you hold yourself and your head, how often you drop your head etc etc etc…

Use search across Jim at ERO sports posts , he has great info on observations as to which helmets have performed well for certain types of positions, but note… with testing getting the optimal for you will not happen… you’ll just be taking a best guess (nothing wrong with that… just to manage expectations).

Probably road.

The LG course…is that available anywhere in the 2014 version? Do helmets work that way? Sale for previous year’s models?

Depends on the race and temperature. I really like the Giro Atmos helmets. They are light and have a lot of vents. Aero helmets should be faster, but it all comes down to if you want a cooler (temp) helmet or not.

Fair comment re temp; but i have found the aero road lids to be more than well ventilated at the 38-40kmh long course race speeds… even with ambient around 30c

Sure they get hotter in summer when doing 20kmh or less climbing for extended periods but that is no long course tri race i do… most are rolling courses…

For the long road rides with heaps of hills i would always use me road bike and road lid and agree the atmos is a decent lid if the fit is right…

Re the sales, yes some older stock, but s to who and where, suggest google shopping… rocking horse shit in Oz, and crap exchange rate ATM so your situation likely very different…

The mentioned evade is probably I good mix cause of usable for road and tri. Not cheap but you don’t really need an aerohelmet in a bit.

Go to the shop and buy one that’s comfortable. It’s the only sensible way.

Giro Atmos II. Super light weight, comfortable, lasts forever, and comes in some decent colors. And pretty cheap. For a bit more, Giro makes the AEON, and it looks super cool, but I’ve never worn one.
