Joule 2.0 Update - HELP

I just connected my Joule to my computer after a ride and it asked me to update to the latest firmware. I accepted and it is attempting to install the new driver but Windows 7 says it is unable to do so because it is an unsigned driver. Now, there is a loop in which the system tells me that I need to complete the New Hardware Wizard prior to continuing with the Joule firmware update. However, I can’t get any further than this screen because its stuck. I dont want to unplug my Joule since it says DO NOT DISCONNECT. Not quite sure how to proceed because there is no way to cancel.

Anybody have any insights on how to proceed? Already contacted their Customer Support but wanted to see if any members experienced this as well.

Thanks,
Marc

There was a thread on the Wattage group about some problems. One reply gave this link: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/libusb-win32/wiki

The other guy said he contacted Cycleops/Saris and they fixed it with him within a day.

Had the same thing but I did disconnect! Now the Joule is bricked and displaying the message - Joule Firmware Update Requested Do Not Disconnect.

Waiting to hear from Cycleops Customer support.

Thanks for the link…I’ll check it out when I get home.

Oh man…I hope you get some good news from CS. Got my fingers crossed for ya!

you need an xp32bit machine.

I heard back from CS:

Thank you for contacting Saris Cycling Group. The new Joule firmware is having some integration issues with a limited number of Window’s 7 and Window’s Vista machines. It causes the Joule to freeze up during the updating process. We are currently working on a fix and in the interim there a few solutions to fix the issue. First, unplug your Joule and try reinstalling PowerAgent (http://www.cycleops.com/en/products/software.html?page=shop.browse&category_id=9). During the installation process, make sure you check the box for firmware drivers, which is on the “Select Components” window. Then plug your Joule back in and go to Tools/Firmware/Reset A/L Bootloader. If that doesn’t work, try to find a Window’s XP or Mac computer. They use different drivers and have been unaffected by this glitch. In PowerAgent, go to Tools/Firmware/Reset A/L Bootloader. That will kick it out of the screen. If you can’t find one of those operating systems, let me know and I’ll create a return authorization to get the Joule back here to fix. Let me know how it goes.

Hmmm, may wait for a while before accepting the upgrade. I’m already on the latest beta, so I’m not sure how much benefit there is to be gained, and having only just got everything working then I really don’t want to risk turning it into a brick.

I actually had to email CS back because their solution did NOT work. However, upgrading the drivers (per the 1st reply) worked great. So no brick of my Joule!!! Thanks!

Did you notice anything funny with your speed after the update. The update notes mentioned something about them changing the way that the speed is calculated. I don’t have an extra speed sensor and have just used the data from my Powertap. After I updated the the most recent firmware, it seems like it is reading about 5-10% faster than it should. I was going to throw an old computer on the bike to compare the speeds but was wondering if anyone else had seen anything like me.

Have you checked the tyre diameter setting. I seem to rememebr that there was an error before where it ignored the diameter setting and used a standard. So if you’d changed that to be laarger than the default then the joule will (correctly) be reading higher.

I accidentally updated 2 days ago as I mistakenly clicked yes and not ‘no’ when I was trying to download and there wasn’t a cancel option. Got to the banner saying ‘windows add new hardware’ and got stuck. In the end I just clicked ‘yes’ and it worked, althoguh there was a 3 -4 minute worry period while it looked like nothing was happening (vista 32 bit laptop).

Worked fine afterwards.

However, I’m having problems with the speed sensors (cyclops) as they seem to kill the batteries in no time. As in 3 weeks of below average use. I have two of them, one on the road and one on the TT bike. It’s not the joule as i’ve tried pairing to another Ant+ receiver.

Not sure what teh solution is other than removing the batteries after each ride and then leaving me with a long pairning process as they give new IDs each time you replace the battery.

I just got the same issue. I tried all the things you suggested but nothing works. Still need help

I totally screwed mine up for a couple days. Bought a new computer, installed the latest poweragent, connected the joule. When is asked for the firmware update, my USB drivers weren’t updated with the latest Windows Service Packs, so the Joule 2.0 FROZE… THEN I DISCONNECTED IT!!! Then when I tried to plug it in, windows wouldn’t even recognize my device.

So I read almost every thread, post, forum and reached out to Saris Customer Service (which wasn’t very helpful btw). In the end this what I did and now it works again.

  1. Let the battery drain out while the Joule was frozen in the Firmware request screen. took about 3 days to run out unplugged.
  2. Downloaded a Windows XP service pack with updated win32 usb drivers
  3. Plugged in the Joule after the windows update.
  4. Once Windows detected the Joule, used Windows Install Wizard to recognize the device.
  5. Once complete and windows said I could use device - Download and install latest version of poweragent
  6. Went to tools in power agent and executed a firmware update.
  7. Re-uploaded all of my workouts I had saved in the Joule.

Back in business. Good Luck!

Yes I updated my drivers as per another post. That worked.
Thanks

I had the same issue new windows didn’t want to play nice with Joule. I tried all those things then called the customer service they have a program reset with instructions they can email you.
