Jogging stroller recommendations

1st child due in April. Hoping to stay in relatively decent shape during first few months after birth.

Looking for recommendations for jogging strollers. Must be good on hills(currently live in Cincinnati).

Any advice is appreciated.

We’re in similar boat. My first is due early May. I already did tons of research and ended up with a Chariot Cougar (www.chariotcarriers.com) It great for a multi-sport dad/mom b/c of the attachments. If you’re just running, I’m sure you’ll here from the Bob revolution(?) fans. BTW - I have yet to use the Chariot - I might have to borrow a kid before May! But, it is beautifully put together, and looks like it’ll be smooth sailing. However, it’s probably not the lighest for getting up hills. That wasn’t as big a factor for me. Good luck!

I picked up the Chariot line just before Interbike last year. They are so cool I almost wanted to have a kid…

Seriously thought the Chariot line is amazing and versatile for bringing your kids on runs/bikes/skiing/ etc. One base carrier and a variety of attachments that all store easily to bring along and swap halfway through–Bike trailer to jog stroller to stroller in the store.

For actually running the baby jogger performance series with the 20 inch wheels is by far the best out there. If you want to use it to go to the store etc, it is not. The chariot is versatile but not even close for running with. The bob is not even in the same league although it does say ironman on it ;-). We have both the single and double baby joggers and they each have over a 1000 miles on them with no problems. Our kids are now 6o plus pounds. Only thing we have needed was to replace worn out tires on the double.

I echo what ChrisG says. We have the Baby Jogger Performance Series with 20" wheels and it’s really nice to run with. The only thing we’ve had to replace is the foam on the handle. It’s solid and smooth, without too many unnecessary bells and whistles. It is not as easy to breakdown as some others, but it’s not too bad.

I have the BOB Ironman. I love it and most of my runs are with child as I have 3 under the age of 3.

Dont plan on running with a baby the first few months after birth. The babys neck isnt strong enough to take the jarring.

Baby Jogger and Bob are both good choices. I went with the Bob Ironman because I am a bit taller than most and its handle was a little higher than the baby jogger.

Another vote for the 20" Baby Jogger. The others are nice, but if you really run, the larger wheels make for a smoother ride for the child and lower rolling resistance for you.

By the way, you probably should wait until your child is at least a few months old before running with him or her in a running stroller. The conservative recommendation is 6 months of age. Even at low speed, their heads can bounce around quite a bit and the baby should have developed some head/neck support. If you do go younger, be sure to use a head/neck support and keep the speed down.

Our third child is due in May (ACK! WHAT was I thinking?!?!?), and am wondering if there are any 3 kid carriers out there?

I am also wondering at around what age a child should be ok to ride the “tandem” child attachment.

What were you thinking?

Another vote for the BabyJogger with 20 inch wheels. Expensive, but definitely worth it.

over the years and 3 kiddies…baby jogger is what I liked.

I just helped my wife out with this purchase. We narrowed it down to Baby Jogger the Bob. We ultimately went with the Bob since I found a good deal on a slightly used one. Both of these allow for a pretty good decline, which means you could take an infant out (provided they have reasonable neck support ~ 2-3 months, and you have an additional head/neck support). The canopy is also very high on these, which means your child will fit in them for a while.

That’s a pretty sweet jogger (who makes it)! Now the question is, do they make one that hooks up to a bike?

do they make one that hooks up to a bike

Got a rope? (and huge lungs?)

P.S. What am I - google?

Dave I have the “Twinner” (i.e. two child) Baby Jogger with 20 inch wheels. I live about an hour away from Cincinnati and I would like to sell it but I have been too lazy to pack it up and ship it anywhere. I’ve used it with one kid and with two kids in it, and it is great, but now that my oldest is 12 years old I think it is time to part with it… If you are planning any more kids and think you might be interested in it just let me know.

Go for the Chariot.

You can pick up a sling that will carry a 6-12 month old baby.

After that, you can seat the baby in the stroller without the sling. Realistically, you probably won’t be able to take your newborn out in the stroller during the first couple of months because their necks aren’t strong enough to hold their heads in place.

After the six month mark, give or take a month depending on how your baby is growing, you’ll certainly be able to take full advantage of having the jogging stroller.

We’ve had ours for almost a year now, after having a BOB, the Chariot is much better. Rolls smoother, feels sturdier.

Good luck!

Actually (not to be picky) but the infant sling is ok to use WALKING asap. I would wait at least a few weeks to run with it though. (Thier lawyers say 1 month on thier website) Good to hear from someone who’s had both. It confirms my research. THanks!

Infant Sling
Give your baby added lateral support while providing maximum comfort and stability. The hammock-like design helps provide a smooth ride. Your baby is reclined and still able to look around and watch the world go by.
Not for use while cycling. From approximately 1-10 months of age.

“I am also wondering at around what age a child should be ok to ride the “tandem” child attachment.”

If you are talking about those one-wheel tandem attachment doohickeys, then I think you should wait until they can ride on their own so you are sure they know the importance of hanging on to the bars. But if you start them on a running bike/balance bike which have been previously discussed, then most kids can ride a 2-wheeler when they are 3 and never go through the dreaded training wheel stage. My daughter was 3, less than 3 ft tall and under 30 lbs when she first rode on her own.

First of all, thanks for clarifying.

We definitely used the strolling feature earlier than 6 mos. closer to 2 mos.

When we noticed that he could hold up his head pretty well and not get jostled by bumps so easily, we started to use it as a jogger, around 6 - 7 mos.

It sounded like the OP wanted to start jogging right away.

Also, to OP, one drawback to this stroller is the lack of a recline feature for after the baby is too big for the sling. Infants/toddlers fall asleep pretty easily strolling or jogging and they look really awkward not being able to recline. Just make sure you jog next to the stroller and take a peak every few mins.

Good luck with your upcoming newborn.
