Jogging Stroller Age?

We just had our first little one! We have a chariot and are really excited for the summer to start to use it- I am worried that we are going to try to use it too early with our little guy.

We have the infant support sling and when he is in it, his head doesn’t move around and he looks better supported than when he is in his car seat.

At what age did you start to run with your kids? When did you bike?

I started running with K in the baby jogger at ~3 mo, with an insert to stabilize her head. I never rode with her, I prefer to ride fast and aggressive and there’s no need for me to ride with my child for fitness. Lots of friends have tho and they seem to wait til ~6mo.

Good luck!

When my son was around 7 months, I did a long run (14 miles) with him.
Took much longer, because had to feed him during the train.
One of my best trains…EVER…unforgetable !
Suggest to run with yours, when he is at least with the neck “stable”.
Good luck and Congrat’s

6 months…

Ran with my guy at about 6 months, when his neck was stable enough.
Brought a bottle of Mommies milk to give her a break and get me some training!
It was alot of fun, still running with him 3.5 years later. No more Mommies milk though, just timbits and apple juice.

Started running with my little guy at 3 months. Started with 1/2 and hr and worked my way up to an hr by 4 1/2 months. He can now cope with 90 mins at 8 months. My wife and I made a conscious decision neither of us was going to ride with him, I don’t trust car drivers and he is too precious to risk.

I have the car seat adapter for the Bob so I was running with my guy at about 6 weeks. He was born pretty strong (and late) so he’s always been able to hold his head up. I’m too scared to ride my bike with him.

I cant remember exactly, but I bet we had him in the jogger at 3 months or so. But it really depends on the kid. Mine is a brute, also late coming out. But our nannies kid is half his size and still just lays there. I think once they are stable you are fine. My kid loves it, totally looking around and then finally sleeps. I am pretty sure he can “run” in the stroller longer than I can push him.

We just started taking him for bike rides in the trailer. He is 10 months. It is a bit nerve racking. but we have a nice park nearby and I dont go on big roads. I am very careful and certainly dont go fast. He loves it. I hook it up to my fixie, and drag the trailer, my wife comes too. its fun and provides a heck of a workout on hills. I think he is pretty safe in there. Its like a roll cage. As long as we dont get hit by a car he will be fine. I even have a little helmet. but it does not fit well yet.

Congrats on the baby! I started mine out at about 6 weeks, but he was a monster baby. He could hold his head up at birth. I ran an ultra when I was 5 weeks preggers so I guess he was used to being bounced around. How about some pics of the triathlete-in-training?

Another vote for about 2-3 months with car seat adapter for their head. Only advice is to always plan like you are going long with beverage and fuel as sometimes they fall asleep and you can add on the length. Makes up for the runs they wont stay in and you have to head home early. Have fun!!

We have a chariot as well. For running, we started at about 11 months. And cycling about 13 months. Just wait until you are pulling them along on your bike and your little one keeps taking their helmet off…oh the joy!

Congrats, ours is 2 months and she loves being in it (BOB off road) already. I have run ahead while my wife ran with her on a super smooth road and the bouncing was nothing. Pushing her over bricks on campus is much worse so I think it really matters how fast and how the surface is. I am going to wait on the trails and like another post she has been holding her head up forever so that may make the most difference. I know a competative runner who ran about 40 miles when hers was 5 weeks! and he is doing fine at 7 months now.

Hello friend. We have Targo city Pushchair for our baby. While purchasing it, the people at the online store www.icoobaby.com metioned that it should be from 6 months after the birth of the baby.we started using it when our baby was 6 months old.

congrats! I have the Chariot as well and started around 3 months running with the infant sling. My girl loves it and has never made a peep. she generally falls asleep as well. for the bike I waited a little longer as I really wanted to have a helmet, but it doesnt actually work well, and she is still super safe even without it. for the bike, the best thing ever is http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3006280&cid= got this after a year.

I have another due any day, so will soon be looking to find someone who wants to trade my single Chariot for a double…

That is the number I was given when my son was born, and I seem to recall that we stuck fairly close to that. He seemed to love being in the jogger - usually fell fast asleep after the first few minutes. My favorite thing to do after that was to take my son in the jogger and the dog for a walk/run along the ocean’s edge several times a week. There was a great 10K route on a nice ocean-side gravel trail that I would do several times each week. Great times.

It’s not about the age per se as it is your baby’s ability to hold his head up and take the bumps. We started running with our son in the Chariot with the Baby Supporter at 3 months, but stayed on the roads/sidewalks and he was without a helmet, trail runs around 5-6 months. One thing to note is we started irunning with him in the dead of Canada winter so he was also so bundled up inside the Chariot that he really wasn’t capable of moving and the model we have has the adjustable suspension system + you can play with tire pressures to smooth out the ride quality. And, at that age, ya, he typically didn’t last too long before falling asleep, so time your runs right.

The guideline for cycling I used was his ability to hold his head up while wearing a helmet - you can practice with the helmet and get him used to it with him just crawling around the house with it on when he’s old enough.

Don’t rush it, you’ll have lots of time to get him used to the Chariot, and as you know, it will be useful for a long time. Our son is 4 now, and I think all the runs and rides in the Chariot worked! He loves to run, and ride and has already done 4 tri’s!

IMO, the baby supporter is probably a better investment than the sling since the sling is really not intended for a child that has the ability to handle the bumps/rigors of anything faster than a walk and the baby supporter will be needed for quite some time after he’s outgrown the sling.
