Javier Gomez To Retire At The End Of The Year

Seems like he’s been struggling for form since he got covid, was hoping we’d see one last great performance from him.

It always amazed me that this guy achieved what he achieved with a heart problem (bicuspid aortic valve). With Benito Lopez now being the new Spanish long course star (7:36 IM) and lack of good results, I wonder if sponsors could have lost a bit of motivation. The guy is a class act and I hope he sticks around the sport.

Sure triathlon fans will be talking about his rivalry with the Brownlees in 100 years time!

And a wonderful human too. Over the last few (5?) years he’s been over here for the Kiwi summers and been amazing with the club juniors, and just in general when out training.

So kudos to Javier and thank you for all that you have done for the sport globally. Even if in some of those races I was obliged by birth to support the Brownlees, I was always happy.

And hoping all the very best for the future, whatever that may entail.

Not one of the people who ā€œknew when to retireā€. But who can fault him?

Probably should have stayed doing ML/D instead of having a crack at Tokyo.

they still make good money, it takes a long time to get good sponsors and its easier to keep them when the peak is over so from a financial point it makes a lot of sense to hang on a few years more.

fair to say he likely is the most consistent short course athlete there has ever been
in my mind AB is the best one day racer tri has seen and javier the most consistent ever .

I think he’s also had some bad luck and his resume could look a lot better than it is still. 2004 Olympics, he probably was the best short course triathlete on this planet already at that time, but not allowed to compete by his federation (heart problems). 2008 Beijing the heavy favourite but picked up a bad injury in the lead up to it that limited him greatly on race day. 2026 Rio again breaks his arm a few months before while in the shape of his life, had to withdraw.

But amazing career nonetheless.

You’re not wrong, unfortunately. But in his defense, he actually was a good training block away from a dominating performance for most of the last few years.

We will bring saying the same thing about Ali in 2 years.

I’ve been saying Alistair is toast for five years. But been saying the same for Javier.

I also want to say this thread cannot exist without this video. I don’t mean to be negative here. I’m being positive. Javier Gomez was such a threat to the Brownlees that they deployed a thug against him.

just to point out there is no proof of this, chances are much higher that the predator in this case thought , he would increase his chances to go to the oly games if he plays over motivated domestique

still a classic video

No proof, but some hints. Did British triathlon do anything against him, or did they rather defended him? Same question for the Brownlees.

I got another picture of me and Javi in Spain a couple weeks ago. Last raced against him during the Hyvee champs a few years ago. One of the nicest guys I ever met. He was the Spain teams coach at this years WTC. Had wife and child this time around, and again very gracious to me and family.
