Jan's arm position (pic)

Dear roadies,

I’ve always wondered, why are Jan’s arms angled so low? Is there a specific material reason? Thanks.

It’s rumored that he won’t go into the wind tunnel, so perhaps he just likes how it feels.

Floyd Landis goes the other way, arms way up…

Leverage?

Marketing.

it looks as if he does it becuase the wind will reflect off of his arms outwards and around his body. This makes an almost total outward motion of the wind on the body therefor increasing his uhmmmmmmmm… errr…
no explanation.

Because he likes 2nd place.

It’s so he doesn’t have to install a cow-pitch like on the old steam trains. It works well for small rodents.

You mean 2nd Place like in the Olympic and Worlds TTs? Oh, wait…those were 1sts…

No, he was second at the Olympic TT in Sydney, did not medal in Athens.

yeah, he sucks.

Wasn’t he gold in the Sydney road race? Yeah, I think he was.

“ask Mr. John Cobb.”

I remember seeing John discussing this and saying that he didn’t believe Jan’s arm position would be very aero. Think it was on his forum a couple of years ago when John had his website up.

Another truly crappy TT rider who rode with the bars angled down (but not quite that far, I don’t think) was Miguel Indurain. ST “critique my position police” would not have approved of his position either. Who knows what he might have achieved, had he bothered to post here?

Yup - no prayer of riding fast in that position. Might as well not even bother showing up… and poor Floyd’s gone way too far the other way. He’s done for too.

I think Jan needs some wind tunnel time… A little bit down would give leverage, but I think that has even gone too far for that…

Well, i predict Jan’s going to take his 2nd win at TdF, this year !!!

On his TT bike with his arms angled down?
;^)

He’s actually bending his forearms.

Maybe he doesn’t like that crease opposite his elbow getting all sweaty so he does that so it cools off and the sweat dries?

Bassey Obot -Self proclaimed wind tunnel and aero expert (go ahead ask me anything).

Leverage, personal preference.

Quote John Cobb (velonews July 2003 after TTT Stage) : "I’d bet dollars to donuts that none of the Bianchi riders had lower drag than the Postal guys and those (Bianchi) guys are dreamin’ if they think those cut off aero’ bars work.
