I’d like to stick my big nose into this for a couple of reasons. The way these two “awards” have been bandied about indiscriminately has bugged me for some time. The catalyst to take the time to get it off my chest is Slowman’s Forum Questions Thread. So, here goes.
First of all, the Jackass of the Week Award (JAWA) was a concept developed by Tribriguy with an honorable intention. It was for:
a) individuals who had done/said something stupid that week,
b) were smart enough to recognize that they had done something stupid, and
c) were honorable enough to call themselves on it, present their jackassery to the
forum, acknowledge their error, and make an apology. All-in-all, a very noble
deed. I am not surprised that this came from a marine, but, I digress.
The Asshole of the Week Award (AHWA) was something that mutated out of the JAWA idea. People started nominating other people for AHWA for various reasons including:
a) they vehemently disagreed on some subject,
b) they were pissed off at some individual,
c) or they were plain too immature and obnoxious.
Calling someone an asshole for any of those reasons was never an honorable or
noble act in my book. Nominating someone for AHWA is just another form of
the same act.
So, lets get the rules straight.
JAWA – A self-nominating award one should aspire to obtain as we all do stupid things at one time or another. The more admirable individuals among us are just better at recognizing it and learning from it.
AHWA – By nominating someone else for this award, one is simply placing ones’ self in contention for the JAWA, optimistically. Otherwise, one is simply confirming their own immature, obnoxious nature.

While you may be correct with how the AHWA has been nominated in the past, I disagree with the “rule” you have posted. AHWA should be someone you think has gone above and beyond the call of duty to be a complete asshole, regardless of whether they “disagreed” with you on a thread or two, and should be based ENTIRELY on how they have treated MANY posters.
While I may open myself up for the JAWA by nominating someone for the AHWA… I nominate Brian286, not because he disagreed with me, but because of his incessant “whining” in the Lance threads and his general assholish behavior of labeling anyone who disagreed with his Lance observations as being a “Lance worshipper.”
I gotta disagree. At best, you are throwing fuel on the fire (Brain286 in this case). At worse, you are just bringing yourself down to their level. What is the saying… Never argue with a fool, they have more experience and will win every time.
Perhaps. Although, I like to look at the “Asshole of the Week” award as a good-natured ribbing rather than a serious attack on someone’s character. I don’t know Brian286 other than through this board. I don’t know if I would consider him an asshole outside of here or not, but IMHO, he’s been a little on the asshole side this week, and this is just a humorous way of expressing my view.
I hope he doesn’t take offense, and judging by his reply, he doesn’t. If I’m being an asshole by nominating someone for Asshole of the Week, I apologize. I think it’s funny, and aspire to someday claim the prize… although I’ll have to work very hard at it to overcome a lot of the folks on this board.
Ooo! I’ll race you and Brian for A$$hole of the week, but don’t be suprised if I let up at the last second and let you take the prize… it’s the right thing to do after all, I mean, since you two feel like you deserve it and it must be considered tradition, right?
Nah, I can’t sprint, but I’ll be happy to be the lead-out man for team Steveperx! This is my first attempt at the prize, so it’s only right that I pay my dues before I’m given a victory.

What are you trying to do? Start that madness from last Spring all over again? You’ll have all the males trying to picture you as the A$$ of the Week until November. Damn, now I’m doing it.
BTW, shouldn’t the A$$ of the week be divided into Age Groups?
Yesterday I nominated myself for Dumba$$ of the Week after being wrongfully awarded FatA$$ of the week, which of course was assumed since I apparently had my head stuffed inside of it.
