Not a fan of sprint distance, the bike can get boring in certain races, the longer the race the more we get to see tactics and more chance of breaks happening and sticking, we get two different distances, we get a more accurate picture of a better triathlete overall, I think theres a place for both distances in a season.
Sanction fee 150k
Prize money 200k
TV Production 280k
TV Graphics 16k
Transportation 180 people
Accommodation - World Tri board members, World Tri staff and Technical Officials
Then in one of the links somewhere it says accommodation for athletes. But hey you can reduce the sanction fee if you “give” 3 sponsor slots to ITU. Pretty sure that hasn’t happened.
I will try and find the article about the first year in Leeds, I seem to remember it cost 1.1 million.
Non of the above covers legal, insurance, licences, road closures, project management, equipment hire etc. How much does it cost just to put the blue carpet down? Plus in the UK they would have to pay for police etc.
Agreed. The solution for a more dynamic race (and then the bike course is a little bit less of importance opening it to more locations) is to shift the format to an Olympic distance enduro triathlon. Swim/Bike/Run x3. I have said this for about 20 years, even wrote to the ITU about it back when.
Olympic distance Enduro would be great ![]()
Exciting to watch
And of course the mtr will always be a b rated event ,it’s the same in athletics it’s good for feds for funding but there is not that much in for the athletes and the single event will always be the one an athlete will want to win most.
Yes but the difference is with athletics or swimming, it’s just another event that you just did. The MTR is completely different in triathlon, and yes totally understand if you are a medal in individual that will be your “real” pathway, but WT has set it up where federations can actually go more all in with the MTR than the olympic distance (or more all in on olympic if you don’t have good teammates- Duffy, etc). Federations in athletics or swimming don’t need to do that. The 4 x 100 relay is made up of you guessed it, the best 100 runners or swimmers. No one is doing that who just ran the 400m or 800 (they have their own relay). In athletics the relays are pretty much just a repeat of the individual events (basically no “distance” relays). In triathlon that’s not really the case, since the events are so drastically different.
In what other olympic sports behaves like this for their relay? I can’t think of a single sport that has as drastic differences between it’s individual and relay event. I’m sure there is some obscure dance or acrobatics but among the non-ball sports, it’s sorta wild how “different” the 2 sports are that triathlon showcases, and again back to my 1 thing that “grinds my gears”. Why we have to use the same athlete in both makes absolutely no sense. Other than because they say we have too.
Wilde confirmed T100 racing next year.
ugh. So Wilde and Yee are going to be spotty participants in WTC races next year?
The production of WTC is good enough to keep me interested, but I’ll be way more interested in the women’s races next year.
I predict Gwen finishes top 10 in the world.
Her World ranking is already up to 9th after this season…
Waugh, Pearson, Bergère and Luis racing T100 as well.
If the sport eventually does go to sprint or super sprint (entry requirement: a disproportionately good swim), you’ll do that until you’re good enough to go middle distance 100/113km.
Great news about all the new additions, imagine there will be a few more in the last category. Now I dont think this is bad news for Sam Long as even though there are more fast swimmers, I dont really think the front of the swim is going to get any faster. Already had some of the fastest in the sport pushing the pace last year, just will be more in the lead group now.
I mean he already had to catch the entire field, so nothing has changed except a few more will be in his sights towards the end if he is having his “best legs in the world” day…
Same, probably the most least interested ill ever be for mens ITU next year, unless one of the Brit lads can start podiuming.
LOL this is terrible news for Sam Long. But again this was always what was going to happen to T100, it was going to be more of an extension of WTCS than some IM dropping down type of athletes. But it’s a guranteed paycheck still in “development” years of his career. So if he can sorta be smart about how strong the races will be, he can use this to really help himself as a triathlete (again I’ve said simply use this series as a monthly “gauge” of his swim progress, not the end result as much). If he holds himself to some standard that he has to be there in the final results, then this could be a disaster.
Do you really think that Bergere and Luis won’t make the swim faster? Personally, I think this is going to be much harder for Sam.
I’m sorry for you ITU / WTCS fans, but the 2025 short course will probably be a very shitty year.
Here’s why:
- Athletes have just been shown how they can excel & earn real money in 70.3 / T100. MvR, Taylor, Julie, Hayden, Leo, Jelle etc. are top examples.
- Rules in middle distance are clear, there’s no federation bullshit nor overwhelming politics.
- The Paris Olympics teams’ discretionary criteria drama is still fresh is athletes’ minds.
- 2028 LA Olympics is 3.5 years away - athletes can earn over a million USD by then, in prize money only.
The majority of athletes staying with short course will be those, who don’t see their chances in the middle distance (again, mostly because of their lack of bike power).
You’ve not mentioned that the majority of top athletes will be mid 30s plus who are moving up, thats even less of a chance beating Yee and Wilde to a Gold in LA!
I sometimes wonder when you talk about earning potential. I don’t think prize money tells the complete story. ITU athletes get quite a lot from their federation. Small stipend yes but correct me if I am wrong, travel, coaching, massage physio etc all paid for. Also, I’m thinking the Olympic champion, and others, do quite well in sponsorship.
If you are not at the pointy end of t100, how well do you do,?
I think that individual sponsorship brings you a few times more than what federation delivers. This is on top and and middle-of-pack performance levels. Check Ruth’s video on her earnings with no good results in 2024.
Well in 2024 a contracted mid-placed athlete - say like Funk - received about $140k just from T100 (race prize money, final standings (#10) bonus and base contract amount).
I expect the overall amounts on the table are the same (or more!) but the x, y z %ages are different (base, prize, bonus) - see the T100 2025 thread for detail.
And for 2024 one can add a whack for the PTO EoY bonus ($20k for #11). Whether this wider bonus continues for 2025 is open to doubt.
Bear in mind that for every T100 the athlete ‘just’ has to pay for travel: the rest is all found (6 nights) ( @BDoughtie )
How do you think Waugh (say) is going to get on in performance terms? As well as Duffy or Spivey or Coldwell (#7 in London on almost zero TT time)?
