Shimano has just announced and unveiled the new Shimano 105 10 speed 5600 series component kit with Hollowtech II FC-5600 cranks and CS-5600 10 speed 105 cogsets. This group will use the Shimano Dura-Ace 10 speed bar end shifters for tri bars, and the ST 5600 STI shifter for road bars.
The new compact Shimano crank is the FC-R700 Hollowtech II with new syncronized 50/34 tooth Shimano rings. Along with this is a compact specific FD-R700 front derailleur.
The new compact crank FC-R700 is NOT specific to any particular group, but rather is a high end crank that is fully compatible with Shimano Dura-Ace 10 speed, Shimano Ultegra 10 speed and even the new Shimano 5600 series 105 10 speed and meant for use with each of these component groups.

About time. I’ve been riding my Stronglight compacts for two years. Amazes me how slow off the mark Shimano was. They must be the General Motors of the bike parts industry.
I just installed the Ritchey WCS compact crank on my DA 9 bike. They installed easily on my DA bottom bracket and just a slight drop in the front derrailleur. Shifting has been solid and I am very impressed with the fit and finish of the cranks.
If I had 10-speed, I wouldn’t need the compact cranks so badly… I wonder if the cranks will work with 7spd ? Maybe I’ll just put a new hub body on the old wheel and skip straight to 10sp…
I don’t understand why they don’t get more play in the discussions on components. Of course, I’ve been a Ritchey snob since the late '80’s when I couldn’t afford one of his mountain bikes. The WCS components just ooze quality. I’ve got a WCS stem and now the cranks on my Ghisallo, and it has never ridden better. I put the cranks on on Friday and already have close to 150 miles on them. I’ve ridden a couple of hilly rides and they have performed as advertised if not better. Plus, my wife thinks they look good on the bike
