IT BAND surgery

Anyone have this done? Thoughts, time of recovery???

I have not personally had this done but in talking with a few people who have, they said it is basically enough time to let the scars seal up, and then as you can take it at whatever pace is comfortable.

I have also heard it is hit or miss if it will work, when I was dealing with ITBS last fall at one point I almost said just do it and lets hope for the best, I have managed another year with significantly less pain, but at age 26… I knew something was not right.

…when I had my last knee surgery on my left knee-- maybe 7 yrs ago or so…as an added bonus - they did some “pie crusting” on my ITB --several small nicks to “lengthen” it per se – recovery was slow (but hey, so am I) — end result was glad they did it. – in addition to stretching, etc (which I had already done for MANY months prior to the surgery) - I think it was the final little push over the hurdle – no complaints on this end.

bit - I’d be pretty slow to have this done as almost everyone can get by ITB probs eventually once they’ve addressed all the causes. That said, if you’re already there, make sure this procedure is part of your surgeon’s “frequently done” list although it’s a relatively straight forward procedure.

Had it done 15 years back - prior to starting Ironman’s - at that point of time with available techonology i had tried everything possible for a period of 2 years - could play squash extensively but couldnt run more than about 2 miles before it became fug ugly!..as always i suggest to people that it should be the absolute last resort - there are 3 other options that i would try today of which 2 were not available back then - Trigger Point Therapy has a great DVD out on treating hips / glutes etc that have a large impact in ITB…if you havent already i’d start there - then move to something like Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (google it) and finally Cortisone…if none of that worked i’d do the surgery again. In a prior life as an Ultra Runner putting a “nik” in the IT Band was common to the point of some orthopods doing it under a local!!. Was it successful ? well when i had it done it got me back to running when I’d given up on the sport - having said that I still find from time to time treatment is required and depending on the severity this ranges from ART through to Cortisone …i have found if i have the discipline to follow the TP routine daily the issue is almost non existant…from what i recall the recovery was around 2 odd weeks…as a side note i developed severe plantar fac a few years later and after a 6 month period of again going through the full spectrum of treatments had great success with ESWT.

wow, didn’t know they did IT band surgery. When they cut it, how big is the cut? Just curious. Where along it? Medial, distal, proximal?

Really?
