Can’t beat Cateye Astrale for the money. I have bought them as cheap as $25 on sale. I have them on three different bikes with no problems in years. Once in a while I have to clean up the contacts if I get in a heavy rain but that is minor.
Performance currently has the Astrale ('03 model) on sale for $19-20…can’t beat it, although it’s a little sketchy in the rain. Gotta keep those contacts dry.
I can say stay away from the Vetta V100 wireless with wireless cadence. Terrible computer. Speed often jumps around +/- 6 mph or more. the cadence often just doesn’t work and then will begin working for a few seconds only to die out again. I have sent numerous emails to their customer service and have not received one call or email back. It’s pretty much brand new and I have made numerous adjustments to get the magnets close enough, etc etc. Frustrating.
I also have a great wired computer with cadence that was distributed by Schwinn. never had a problem but unfortunately, I don’t think they distribute it anymore. You could try checking their website.
Most importantly, stay away from the Vetta computer or try their wired version.
The Echo F2. Unlike the Astrale, the F2 has stood up to the Oregon rains without failing. I also like the fact that you can view speed, cadence and one other option (elapsed time, avg. speed, distance traveled) simultaneously. Recalls average and max cadence as well (not available on Astrale).
I have had excellent luck with the Echo F2 computer, you can get front or rear mount for it as well. Never failed in rain. After about 5 years the contacts start to corrode a bit and then it can be touchy but I just buy a new harness and it’s good to go again.
