I’m making my own sports drink for cycling and triathlon with maltodextrin, fructose, and sodium citrate. The product I bought has a sodium content of 23.48 mg per 100 g, according to the technical sheet.
This seems very low, especially since I’d need 150-190 g of sodium citrate to reach 3500-4500 mg of sodium in my drink. Does this percentage sound right? Has anyone used sodium citrate for this purpose and can share their experience?
Maybe it’s because is based on serving size (2 gr), which according to the nutritional content of my product it should be around 4 calories. I’ve found something similar here. Also I’ve just realized that my product has a purity between 99% and 100.5% lol.
pure sodium citrate is 26.7% sodium, though if it is hydrated etc it could be less. So your sodium citrate is 87.9 % pure, the rest is water as can be seen from the certificate as expected value would be 11-13% which add up to 100%…
Bigger question why do you want 3500 mg sodium. The recommended daily intake is 2300 mg… that is extreme and really not going to be pleasant to drink, think sea water… which is 1068 mg/100ml water.
If you want to know how much sodium citrate to use consider looking up Dr. Alex Harrison About Us — Saturday.
Thanks! I’m actually using Dr. Harrison’s app. I’ve been following his recommendation of preparing a 1L bottle with all the carbs and sodium combined to use as a gel, while my other two bottles contain only water. I sweat a lot, and my next race will be in hot conditions. Since I’ve been consuming around 1500 mg of sodium per hour, I haven’t had any issues with cramps.
I’d recommend just buying bulk sodium citrate from amazon. I use his app for all fueling and just use pure cane sugar, pure sodium citrate, and caffeine pills added if desired.
