Is this laptop bag unprofessional for interview?

I’ve had this bag for a few years - day to day it’s great, but a little woah.
I’m interviewing in a few weeks and will bring a laptop for a presentation and a portfolio.
Would prefer to not buy another bag, but don’t know if a suit plus hardpack backpack would leave a bad first impression.
What does ST think?

no that is awesome. at worst nobody will notice, at best it will start a conversation.

What kind of position? For an exec or a conservative firm, it’s not that great. A lot of places it would be fine.

Another bag I own is this messenger bag, more conventional but bright orange

.

Looking for biotech phd positions.

I have been in a few meetings where i seen unique bags and if anything they love it, bc its not the normal wear. It shows that you are different and no afraid to stand out.

In my day our laptop computer bags would have been in wild psychedelic patterns before ever having any hope of being considered cool. The only problem is that laptops weren’t invented back then.

How much more conservative can you get than a black bag? Thank God I was young when I was and not now.

Almost looks carbon fiber go with it.

It is carbon fiber. Weight helps for stairs.

I disagree with the others.

Get a new bag. It sounds like you are in a conservative profession and your interview clothing should reflect that.

I’ll poke around on the interwebs a bit and post suggestions.

" It sounds like you are in a conservative profession and your interview clothing should reflect that. "

If its really that bad then find a new profession

Dude they will be so jealous of you. Most definitely use it.

You really think someone walking in to a job interview at a corporation should be wearing a backpack? He isn’t in high school.

I’m very torn on this. On one hand I say, yes, yes and hell yes. If it’s something that is comfortable, not obscene and in any way improves performance of ones job, which this would, hands free carrying case equal awesome, then I personally and many other would look at it as “Here’s a person that does what they think will help them the most without worrying entirely about what others think”. Those are people I’d want working for me.

OTOH many businesses want automatons not thinkers and certainly not people that think more than the person hiring them. They would see a carrying case like that as “Out of the norm” and thus a threat.

I’d agree with cerveloguy, get a new profession if someone is going to not hire you for something like that…but then again sometimes staying with the norm is worth it.

Like I said, I’m torn.

FWIW I’d hire you…if I needed a PHD for anything…and made enough money to pay the salary

Sorry but jobs are hard to find right now and you need to look like a professional who takes the interview and job seriously. Once you get the job, wear the backpack.

When I was job hunting I spent some bucks on a great Dooney and Bourke bag to use which fit my printed resume. Now that I have a job I use my messengers and other bags I get at REI.

You can’t overdress for an interview but you can underdress. That backpack would look ridiculous with a suit.

“You really think someone walking in to a job interview at a corporation should be wearing a backpack? He isn’t in high school.”

Honestly, I wouldn’t know. I’ve been self employed all my working life, so the corporate culture is very foreign to me. It wouldn’t be an issue to me if I was hiring somebody as I’d be more interested in their ability to to the job than their laptop carrier.

Why do you even need a bag?

Just bring a portofolio with a tablet in it to make notes.

PS I love that bag and it would not phase me as an employer.

At the corporate law firm, they would all want it.

On days I need my laptop I use a laptop backpack. If I don’t need the laptop, its a tactical messenger bag.
