IS this a new race series?

I just saw this calendar from a company called Cal Tri and they have a very extensive set of dates and locations here. Now I know of Tri California, which does Wildflower and used to do a bunch more, but I don’t think this is them??

Anyway I recognize a lot of the cities here locally who have had big local races over the years. Was jut wondering if these are them, or new additions to those cities..What’s the scoop on this group, and any details of the races from anyone in the know??

they have been around for a while. What is cool is they have a VOGO deal, volunteer a race, get one free

This may be good for some folks, and a dealbreaker for other folks, but Cal Tri is not USAT-affiliated. I haven’t looked into their insurance structure.

Cal Tri were the first triathlons I ever did. The RD is an awesome dude. The deferral and transfer policy is amazing. They’re events I’ve brought a lot of first timers to.

Why would one care if they are USAT certified?

To be a USAT race, you need a certain level of insurance. Some people find that comforting.

Got it. Thank you for explaining.

I think for rankings too, doesn’t it have to be USAT certified?? Thanks for the replies, the name is so similar to a couple other orgs, just wanted to see if it was any of them..

Yes it does. I think rankings are not as popular anymore. California requires insurance for all public events, so it is interesting how they are keeping costs low

I was actually looking at their calendar too. Has anyone participated in their events in previous years? They seem pretty well organized.

I’m genuinely curious, what type of loss would you expect that insurance to cover?

Which is somewhat different than “what will it cover”

I haven’t raced in many years but I have never heard of anyone being paid by the USAT insurance. And that includes the guy whose bike was stolen from transition.

No idea and I don’t care, but it is a difference. If you do care, I’m sure you can look up what the USAT insurance covers. If the race isn’t USAT then I’m not sure how you would know.

I Know of many, and some families that got millions for deaths in races. It’s especially helpful if you are one of the 50 million who have no health insurance too, gives you a primary coverage in the race, and I think even training or on the way to it??

From lawsuits by private lawyers, not usat…(?)

They’ve been around awhile, seem to have “bought” up a lot of events outside of California. I put it in quotes because I have no idea if those races were healthy or were actually about to shut down. There is a member who shills their OPEDs in the NCAA triathlon thread.

Just read an article today in Triathlete Magazine that had a discussion about Cal Tri and their insurance. Seems they can get outside insurance coverage for about $4.33 per athlete compared to the one day $15 per athlete charge from USAT. The article was actually about triathlon participation probably being higher then reported due to non-USAT events being under reported.

One day athlete charge for USAT is probably similar pricing for the insurance piece. The $15 is not just “insurance” it is a one day membership and all of the logistics that comes with being a one day member.

Ya, USAT only pays out 25k. But I assume… that if USAT is the insurer of the race they’ve got deep pockets for your lawyer to go after in the event there is some major negligence.

When someone crashed into me in an IM, it caused damage to my bike ($400), tore up my trisuit ($300), and caused road rash and subsequent IT band issue (that I later had about $200 in PT work for). But I never got the guys number/name, didn’t want to deal with the paper work etc. and just bit the bullet.

Yes I’ve done both cal tri Austin and cal tri Fort Worth. They are a fantastic race company and I would HIGHLY recommend signing up.

I believe if you do 25 they let you do any others after for free

Today’s reminder that the USAT insurance is secondary to whatever primary insurance you have…you gotta bill out to your other sources of coverage first, THEN the USAT coverage kicks in.

Meanwhile here in Oregon we’ve got big issues with liability insurance carriers nearly entirely moving out of the state…

same with USAC as I experienced.
