Is there such thing as a low heel drop, supportive shoe?

Short background:
Until 2 years ago I was running in a supportive shoe, orthotics (for overpronation) and high heel drop. Was mostly running in Asics supportive shoes. 2 years ago moved towards a neutral shoe with 4-6mm heel drop and stopped using orthotics. Afer persisting for 2 years I was having ongoing achilles issues. I adapted to the lower heel drop as the achilles elongated , but never adapted to the achilles problems caused by overpronation.

I prefer a mid foot strike, which I can achieve with a low heel drop. But I need some arch support to reduce my overpronation.

So, is there such thing as a shoe with a low heel drop to allow a midfoot strike, but with arch support?

What do you mean by low heel drop? 6mm? 4mm? 0mm? I run in the Saucony Fastwitch and the Saucony Mirage, both of which have 4mm heel drop and some arch support

I battled over pronation for years, tried everything, kind of the same road as you. I transitioned to mid foot using the brooks pure cadence, it is made for pronators needing some additional support. I have had zero issues (knocks on wood).

I tried a pair of Saucony Grid Lightspeed which I think are 4mm drop, so I guess 4-6mm drop (compared to most Asics which I am guessing are more like 10-12mm). The Grid Lightspeed have a semi curved last, and only a little arch support. I could try putting my orthotics in these shoes, but I’ve just had enough of finding the hard way, through injury, that these shoes aren’t the best for me.

The Fasttwitch seems to have more arch support. I’m just looking at photos and looks like the Asics DS Trainer, but with less heel drop. Thanks for the info, I might look into these.

Thanks, I’ll also look into those. Very frustrating that I could run in a minimalist shoe most of the time then have my achilles flare up randomly every few weeks. Just need to sort out the correct shoes.

Was going to suggest the Altra Instinct or Provision. Zero drop, though. I’ve found the difference from zero to 4mm to be a non-issue. YMMV.

Why not do a shoe like the Kinvara or PureFlow along with orthotics?

Doesn’t Newton have a low drop shoe with stability?

Adidas Hagio. Quite light, extremely breathable, not much of a drop, but a little more shoe underfoot vs. the ULTRA light racing flats i was using (Asics Piranhas).
I like mine very much. Would buy another pair.

That’s kinda like telling a guy who cautiously drives a beige automatic Camry to take a bright red Ferrari with a stick and a real clutch for a test drive.

Love it! EVERYBODY should at some point try a “Farrari” AND a “Camry” (running shoes, bikes etc.)so they can make a CHOICE as to what they want! They may change their mind! I have seen so many people buy “mountain” bikes (especially back in the 80’s and 90’s) when they would have been far happier with a hybrid or road bike!

Brooks pure cadence. Awesome shoe. I have bought 8 pair between the first version and second. I probate a little more in my left foot…have arch cookies in my left or a super feet insole. Love them. Plus I have a narrow feet and they are a little more snug than the pure flow.

Yep - a few of them. Motion (4mm), Distance S (3mm), and the new Energy (6mm).

Addidas Tempo…were exactly this…a pretty light weight trainer with a relatively low heel drop, but a small medial post and a slightly stiffer shoe…My wife runs in these and loves them…although the new model might have changed a bit…I think someone mentioned the mirage… There are a hand full of shoes in this category…

If you need pronation support, a little bit if a heel is probably going to be part of that, but looks for light weigh trainers that are a little more stiff/firm…What you probably enjoyed getting away from is the really supper cush/built up heel…

I’ll bet you’re a f’n heel-striker.

I have recently used the following:

Altra Provision - like it, although stability is produced by adding a second insole to the shoe which seems strange at first. Shoe is flexible provides stability, but not much of a sole. Would be hesitant to run over an hour in them.

Brooks Pure Cadence - I don’t love it as a daily trainer, although I am seeing it everywhere now. Good race shoe up to 10k, feels fast but overall too cushioned for me which makes it feel like it lacks support on the medial side.

Peal Izumi M3 - Great overall feel but the sizing is horribly wrong. The shoe is extremely narrow and short so go up a half size from normal running shoe. If you typically where a 13 you are out of luck.

Hoka Stinson - Very good as well. A little too much shoe for me but very nice ride. Not a great tri shoe as it doesn’t drain well.
