So, looks like I need to move my extensions so I can grab my shifters better. That will cause me to have to shorten the rear of the extensions so I don’t smack them with my knees. Is there a way to cut the extensions shorter and remove the waste without removing the routed cables and not damaging them? Hate to have to take the bike to the shop for this.
If they are metal you can use a pipe cutter, they make a clean, straight cut, the cut off portion the would have to be cut with a short bladed hacksaw. Carbon, I don’t know if the pipe cutter will work.
I was thinking of the same thing.
I have the Bontrager Race Lite clip on bars. I need to shorten them up by cutting the back end like you. The only way I can think of that might work would be using a plumbing pipe cutter (cheap at any hardware store). Then after you cut to the length, use some metal shears or a dremel tool to cut the trimmed excess along the length. Then you should be able to remove it from the cable.

Yes. Tubing cutter and hacksaw. Place tube cutter on the tube where you want to cut. Lightly score the tube so that you leave a cut impression in the tube. Remove this tool. Take hacksaw and start cutting from the open end of the tube (cutting along side of the shifter cables…following them into the tube) until you reach ~1/16 short of your scored lines. Remove hacksaw and place tube cutter back on the score line and finish the cut. Work the loose cutoff like a clamshell to fatigue the remaining joint. You will need to clean up the cut with a file.
Note, that you will likely still have to adjust your shifting at the derailleurs. I have found that even small changes in stem length, pitch or location on steer tube affects shifting due to the resulting changes in the bends of the shifter cables.
Best soluting it to remove the cables, cut the extensions, reinstall cables and trim them to the ideal length.
it’s pretty simple to remove the cables, so why not just do that?
if you just cut the extensions, what are you going to do with the extra housing?
pull out the cable, take the extensions off, cut em, shorten housing, reinstall. quick/easy job.
