For some reason much of the American population considers basketball (and football, for that matter) athletes to be the most athletic guys out there.
I also find this interesting. Your average American feels that their “ball” sport athletes are the best on the planet. I’ll never for get Charles Barkley on ESPN stating that Armstrong “just rides a bike.” This thread reminded me of an article by Skip (clueless) Bayless from a few years back. He tried to argue that certain baseball, basketball and football players were better athletes that LA. He argued that Allen Iverson could probalby do very well in the TdF. I believe he even stated that John Elway was a better athlete! LOL…
The closest he came to a decent argument was Dion Sanders. In the end this is speculation, at best…unless you try to say Elway is a great athlete.
(but, as I can’t leave well enough alone, I think that Nate Robinson could probably make a compelling case for King James not being the greatest athlete in the NBA, let alone the world. Greatest BBall player ? Sure. Athlete? No way.)
Uhhhh, did you just say Nate Robinson? I had to think about who he was for a second. And then I had to think about how his name got brought into this thread? Maybe you should call your NBA buddy back and tell him what you posted. Then he’ll respond and tell you that YOU are the idiot!
You won’t hear any disagreement from me there. I hardly consider golf a sport, really. The majority of golfers I would not give much credit as “pro athletes”.
But you have to admit, Tiger has taken the game to a whole different level. If anybody could make golf seem athletic, he’s the guy.
Let’s see. Golf, played with any degree of competitive competence requires strength, flexibility, total-body coordination, mental acuity, and both physical and mental endurance.
…but not a sport. Got it.
First of all, I said I “hardly” consider it a sport. It is right on the border line for me.
As you said: “played with any degree of competence”, it has the qualities of a sport. I think some of the top golfers (esp. Tiger) play with that degree of competence.
For the rest of the general population, I see it as a hobby, a game, etc.
*Note: this is only my opinion. No need for anyone to get offended if you don’t agree.
So the guy can dribble a basket ball and slam dunk? Big f*cking deal. And that’s supposed to make him the greatest athlete? Is basket ball even a sport?
PPPOOOOOOEEEEEE. I guarantee either of the Klitchko bros could knock him out in a boxing match.
So the guy can dribble a basket ball and slam dunk? …
You didn't watch the game, LBJ wouldn't win the French open, or the ping-pong worlds, either. The best athlete is a retarded argument because there is no one athlete that could even possibly be the best in all sports. BTW I can't even name the 10 sports in Decathlon.
I’ve never watched a NBA game in my entire life and probably never will. Couldn’t care less about a bunch of seven foot tall black guys in potatoe sack fitting uniforms playing a game that was actually invented in Canada.

Maybe that’s because there is only one sport “in” decathlon, namely Athletics. There are 10 events in decathlon. The fact that you are ignorant of what they are might explain your ignorance about what it takes to master the events.
pole vault
javelin
shot put
discus
long jump
high jump
110 hurdles
100m
400m
1500m
My alma mater has a nice little DIII decathlon program, so I’ve started following a bit. Has had a few national champs, and many more All-Americans, including one this year.
