Is Lebron the best athlete on the planet?

I love B-ball. I’m a Nuggets fan all the way. But, seriously, is there a better athlete in any sport, beyond Lebron James.

Wow.

I would have to say yes, maybe. I am not a real basketball fan but what he does is incredible.

of course there is! Bryan Clay of the US is the olympic gold medalist in the decathlon…he is much more athletic all around than lebron.

from his wikipedia page: “The Olympic decathlon champion is referred to as the “World’s Greatest Athlete” and prior to the Olympics, Clay was tested by SPARQ to establish his SPARQ Rating across a number of different sports. The test is meant to measure sport-specific athleticism and in the football test Clay recorded a score of 130.40, the highest ever recorded. By comparison, Reggie Bush scored a 93.38 on the popular test.”

he can sprint, run distance, throw, jump, vault, hurdle, etc. all together better than any single person on the planet.

I say, Lebron spends 6 weeks, and he could dominate decathlon. 6 weeks… Sport is funny thing, part mental, part physical. The mental part is hard to define, the physical part is relatively easy… you just have to beat(sp?) gravity. I think that’s the beauty of b-ball, to score you have to beat gravity and your opponents. Gravity is harder.

i really find it hard to believe that lebron, in 6 weeks, could train to run a 10.36 100m, a 4:38 1500m, throw a discus 55.87m, a shot 16.27m, a javelin 72m, vault 5.15m all within 2 days, and in no way could he “dominate” all 10 events.

If Lebron brings the NBA Championship to Cleveland then yes you can call him the best athlete on the planet.

Not a f’ing chance. Not in 6 weeks, not in 6 months, not in 6 years. 6’8" and 250lbs does not make a very good decathlete. He’d get his ass handed to him in the hurdles, PV, 400 and 1500, and probably in the HJ, too.

agreed…to say that a basketball player could train in 6 weeks to beat the best athletes in the world is just ridiculous.

Well, Bra… its all hypothetical 'cause it will never happen, but. yeah, I would stand by that. LBJ could not just win but dominate at the decathalon with 6 weeks. The competitive spirit combined with the raw athletic ability… no chance. The current top ten in the Decathalon are a D sport when compared to not just Basketball but say… tennis, short course T and F (100 and 200), golf, hockey, soccer, football…

Just drunk in Texas and mouthing off, but still… prove me wrong.

Bob.

you must be drunk if you honestly think that lebron james could DOMINATE the decathlon in just 6 weeks. he may be a good athlete, and a great basketball player, hell he could be the best basketball athlete in the world, but to put him head and shoulders above the likes of bryan clay is just ludicrous. hell, curtis beach, a high school decathlete, could probably score higher in the decathlon then lebron james.

No F…ing way. I’ve never fully understood (In my own personal ability) the difference between running a mile full out, and 35 of 40 minutes full out at an “anerobic” sport like tennis/soccer/basketball. But seriously if the culture, and the money were behind Decath. instead of B. Ball, where would Lbron be? I stand by the 6 week standard. When I was 15 I ran a 4:12 1500, I was nationally ranked in Canada. If LBJ were beside me at the start line, I would have been F…d.

Honestly, If I could I would switch my entire investment strategy to giving LBJ in the DCath against the last olympic Gold winner with 6 weeks of training I would go with LBJ. But… never gonna happen.

Bob

you must not understand how much, not only athletic ability, but skill is involved in the decathlon: there is no way he could perfect javelin, high jump, and pole vault, which is quite possibly the hardest individual sport there is out there. no way in hell could lebron excel in decathlon with 6 weeks, months, even years of training.

OK, so maybe the decathlete could beat LBJ in a decathlon. How would they do on the basketball court? Which would be closer - the decathlon or the basketball game? The decathlete doesn’t score on the court at all…LBJ scores some points in decathlon just for showing up.

There is a certain sense of your body vs. the “props” of your sport. At the end of the day there is no true argument except actual competition. I fully understand (or at least I think I do) that LBJ has never attempted a poll vault. But… think about it. If I had two horses in a race, one was the last olympic Decath guy, vs. LBJ. and the competition was 6 weeks from next monday, who would you choose. Turns out the NBA B-ball #1 guy (I think, at the top human level) is a much higher level of both skill and strength sport than decath is.

Deleted 'cause I realized I was contributing to a “best athlete” thread. (Smacks head and walks away…)

This sounds like those kids on AOL that say bicycling is not a sport and that Michael Jordan could out ride the guys in the Tour…

He may be a good athlete but he is not even the best player in the NBA…the best are the best when the chips are down. he may be the reason the Cavs are so good but in the “Clutch” you cannot count on him for the win. How many game winning baskets (last seconds of the game) has he had in his career? Paul Pierce and Kobe probably have more game winning shots since Jan than he has his hole career

As someone who has actually completed a decathlon in competition, I can assure you that you don’t have a clue what it takes to train for and complete a decathlon. You are either still drunk or you are trolling.

An “NH” in the pole vault renders any other points you score moot.

You can’t be serious…LeBron would have hard time breaking 6:00 for a mile…a 4:12 1500 at age 15 is fantastic…far beyond what he could do…
