Is it worth it to get Jet C2's vs. Non-C2

I have an opportunity right now to get the Jet 60/90 combo for a good price; unfortunately, they are not the C2 rim. I know the C2 is lighter by about 120 grams or so, but I also hear claims that the rolling resistance is much better on the C2’s. My question is, is it worth it to get the Jet 60/90 w/o C2 or should I just wait until I have enough money to get the C2?

the non c2 rim fits perfectly with the bontrager aero TT tire in 19mm

i prefer it, i suspect its faster than any combo of tire with the c2 rim

cool, thanks

if I had infinite money i might go non c2 front and c2 rear =)

It could be all in my ‘hed’ (hee hee) but I find my Jet C2 crazy comfortable and very ‘sticky’ in tight turns. In fairness, I am sponsored by them, but I didn’t pursue the sponsorship until after purchasing these wheels and realizing how amazing they are. Next year I’m hoping for some Ardennes for my road bike!

Do you suspect the non-C2s with a 19mm are faster than any C2 because skinny trumps all? I’m noticing Zipp is widening it’s rims as well (look at the Super 9 rim versus all the other disc rims their 2010 catalog). The 303 is wider, the 101 looks as wide as the Ardennes, and I think some of the others were widened for 2009 IIRC. Not that I know what that all means. But the two wheel leaders seem to be trending to wider rims to the casual observer.

Could it be that they are optimizing around the most commonly used tire widths?

This is because, to the casual observer, a wider rim rides better. Look at the Ardennes (Hed.), the Zipp 303, and the Easton EA90s. Wider rims allow for lower pressure, better cornering, and are more forgiving without being less stiff.

The 101 is the same idea.

To answer the OP, C2 is gonna be fast, but so is a non-C2.

I have 60 C2s and they do seem to corner nicer than the old 404s I have, granted that’s not exactly comparing C2 to non-C2, but take it for what it’s worth.

Well, that’s what I thought I’d get when I got my C2 rims: wheels optimized for 23mm tires. But when I asked for best tire choices HED recommended the 19mm Bonty TT tire (pre-aero wing I think), for the front, as did Damon Rinard in a post here on Slowtwitch. So at that point I had wheels optimized for 23mm, except they went faster on a 19mm! So the optimization wasn’t necessarily for speed, alas.

Fast forward to now, and HED is changing its recommendation (at least to me) to the Conti Attack on both front and back, saying it tested faster in the wind tunnel than the Bonty TT (the Bonty TT was still second fastest). The Attack is 22mm I think, so that comes closer to the “vision” of wheels that go fast with on 23mm tires. But the rolling resistance of the Attack? HED didn’t seem to have the data on that other than noting that Conti tires have improved RR-wise recently (I presume that’s the magic of the “Black Chili”). I’ll bet the Bonty 19 TT AW is actually faster when you combine RR and Aero Drag (and I haven’t seen anything that says the wing-rim gap actually *hurts *its performance.

All that said, I like riding my Ardennes a LOT, and my racing set of Jet C2’s are better wheels than I am a rider! But these are my first serious sets of wheels so I’m no source of comparative information for the OP.

I think your observation is correct, but the tire-wheel decisions don’t seem simplified by the wider rims, at least not yet.

I have to say that my C2 wheel also fits “perfectly” with the 19mm Bontrager TT tire. In fact the 19mm bontrager fit better on the C2 than it did on my DT 1.1 .
