Is it worth for me to leave austin,tx and move to riverside,Ca?

I and my wife had talk about this topic. We had going through Pro and Cons about this. We still not sure if we will make right choice to leave austin to riverside. I’m put triathlon training n community in my priorities of our life. Here s few pro and cons.

Pro
Me- Job, around my family in Ca, warm weather all year, mountains scenic. Cool cities near by to riverside such as SD, LA, big bear, Vegas

Wife- none ( actually she doesn’t want to move)

Cons
Me- living cost, traffic, longer commute to specific training place,no idea if it ll be great place to training close by in area such as run trail, access to various pool, bike routes w great wide shoulder path, no idea about triathlon community. Will i be success as triathlete in Riverside?

Wife- she want to stay austin. She think ill not be success as triathlete in ca not same as in austin

Seems like an easy one…happy wife, happy life.

A marriage should not be based upon your triathlon hobby. You’re wife comes first. You know what you have in Austin. It’s not like you live in Michigan or something during Winter. If Boulder,CO is the triathlon capital of the world and they can handle winter there, I think you can handle Austin.

Remember the golden rule. When the wife is happy, you’re happy. If she isn’t, you’ll be miserable aside from training. Austin is a pretty cool place and a hell of a lot cheaper than living in Cali.

Colorado or Henderson, Nevada (just outside of Vegas) would be a better choice of a place to move IF you are dead set on moving.

You think you’ve got it rough? I want to move to Hawaii. My wife wants to stay in NY. Guess what, we’re staying in NY!

What’s the winter weather like in Austin vs Riverside? I just looked at City-Data and it doesn’t look very different

You failed to mention a couple minor things like your job/career in the equasion. Are you thinking of turning pro or are you a pro? In ten years is your job/career opportunities better in Cali or Tx ? Triathlon, job/career, or wife rate them 1, 2, or 3rd priority? There is your answer. All three are big ticket items in your life. That sounds cold but this is not the first time I have seen this come up. Seen people leave behind marriagesdoing this sort of thing. (some good, some not good)

When I was 25ish I probably would have said racing, job, wife was the order. ( I lost the wife along the way.)

When I was 40, I probably would have said #1wife, #2 job,#3 racing. (still have the second wife)

Now that I am 60 the wife is one for sure, exercising (not racing that much any more) is 2nd, and job is dead last as I am looking at retirement sometime not too distant.

If you are close to being a pro, making an OlympicTeam, or think you could make a living on sport I would go for it. You never get your youth back. If you are getting closer to 40 than 30 your family life/wife possibly kids and job to get enough money to live well gets pretty important.

Hard decisions, but if you plan on keeping your wife for a lifetime, you damn well better have her on board 100% whatever you do.

Austin is a great sports town and has world class riding not too far out of town. Texas is a tough state in any sport. Their tri scene is probably in the top five or six. LoCal, Boulder, and maybe SoCal are ahead of Austin, but not by much. Good luck

Did I write this post or did you?

To add a layer, I didn’t even want to move to NY yet here we are.

I live about 3 cities over (Redlands) from Riverside and cycle there almost every day. The first thing is; the area is not what people expect from California; you are 40 minutes from the beach, its hotter than the coast (averages 95 in the summer) and almost as crowded as Los Angeles. Still, it is just a drive to a myriad of places and you could do something new every weekend for a year and there would still be things you would miss. Palm Springs, LA, OC, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Death Valley, 29 Palms, Vegas…tons of stuff to do.

The Triathlon community is okay, there is a Masters group there (and a few in Redlands) a few cycling clubs, but I don’t think there are any big tri clubs in Riverside. Open Water swimming can be done at a lake (Perris) or at the ocean. There are a ton of places to ride including a 20 mile bike path that is for the most part empty. There is a weekend hammerfest (Raincross) and quite a bit of other group rides. The cycling in the IE is good. You have tons of HC climbs (Palomar, Baldy, Big Bear) and a bunch of small ones.

I’ve never been to Austin so I won’t compare, but that’s what it is.

I live in Austin and we have a great tri and cycling community. You just have to find the right group. Don’t forget IM Austin!!!

Unless someone is threatening to kill you if you stay in Austin, I would not make that move…

I’ve never even been to Austin (but have been to Riverside - lots ) and I agree…

If I had a choice between:

a) 12 months/year in Riverside; or,
b) 6 months/year in Riverside and 6 months/year in Hell;
I would choose:

c) 12 months/year in Hell.

Why would anyone WANT to move to Riverside? I lived there for about 4 years, had enough and moved back to MI. Never even missed the place or ever thought of going back for a visit.

Stay in austin.

San Diego guy here, I don’t even like to drive thru Riverside.

Stay in Austin.

Lived in Riverside for 5 years and moved 2 years ago to San Diego.

One thing people have failed to mention is the abysmal air quality from June through August/September. You cannot reliably plan to workout after 11AM for much of this time without unhealthy ozone levels.

As others mention, Raincross is a solid ride and the Santa Ana River trail in Riverside is empty most of the time. You can easily ride your TT bike without interruption on the trail ‘most’ of the time.

Based solely on Austin’s reputation, if you enjoy nightlife and more of a food culture, you will miss this in Riverside. Riverside lacks non-chain dining establishments for the most part.

Austin, hands down! If you ever plan to have kids you don’t want them in that school district or just about any school district in the LA area.

Re the mountains, they are only beautiful when you can see them. The smog can really cut into visibility as well as your lungs.

Have you checked out the taxes? Car insurance? Quality of life in general?

The grass is a lot browner in Riverside. Stay put!

+1 to what AlwaysCurious said. My inlaws live in Riverside and work takes me out that way occasionally, and I can’t find much of any reason to like the place.

Honestly I live in the South Bay and have been looking very fondly at Austin, would love to move there but wife is content here.

Why would anyone WANT to move to Riverside?

Yeah. I even had to pull up the map as I thought I must be thinking of the wrong place when I read Riverside.

There are only two upsides to that place that I can think of… The drive to Dan and Montys place isn’t that bad, and it’s reasonably close to Perris Valley Skydiving.

Don’t forget to look at what CA will tax you vs TX.
