Well, is it? I’m having a bitch of a time getting it to stay on my back seatpost.

Yes, it is… Buy an XLab saddlewing or similar contraption.
Duck Tape
.
Get yourself a small saddle bag and attach it to underneath your seat…you can carry 2 spare tubes, 2 CO2 cartridges, and tire levers with very little weight penalty. Imagine how annoyed you’d be if your race was over in the first couple miles of the bike with a flat tire.

Tufo tubular clincers with the sealant would do it for you. Then you would only have to worry about a ripped side wall, but new tires should avoid that.
Well, I just finished a 1/2 with no spare I would only risk this with tubulars though. I don’t think Tom D ever carries a spare, even in full IM races.
ducT tape.
I have 7 IM, many half, and all of my training rides…never ever carry a spare…bad mojo to carrry a spare…bad mojo…
When I have for some reason had a spare…I needed it…odd…all about the mojo man.
Clinchers, I would take spare(s). Tubular, that depends on how much you really care about finishing and if you have Tufo sealant, etc. My wife did a half - IM last week on Tufos with no spares, but it wasn’t an “A” race for her. That and I think she’d never get the tubular off the wheel…
i never carry one in a 1/2. what’s the point? by the time you get it changed the race is gone. i see a 1/2 more as a long olympic distance.
I had TWO flats at columbia a few weeks ago, so to my mind it’s stupid to race an oly without at least two spares! For Mooseman last weekend I had two tubes; didn’t really consider three. If it came to that, Iwould just think someone somewhere was trying to tell me something…
Google and see. The first application of duct tape was used by the military. They wanted a waterproof tape to use in wet situations. They called it Duck tape. After the war forced air heating and airconditioning came in favor and the ductworks became popular. Duck tape was modified to duct tape and hense became a word. Duck brand duct tape is one of the leading producers of Duck or duct tape and as far as the world is pretty much concerned they interchange with each other.
Besides, who gives a rats? it’s the freeking WWW where no rules of spelling, punctuation, or grammer seem to apply. Except NO SPOILERS and NO ALL CAPS by god.
I have clinchers and carry 1-2 spare tubes in my utility bag under the seat. I also carry a small tool set, 1-2 c2 cartridges, and tire pry’s. Doesn’t weight a lot.
Here’s my thought on the subject. It’s like buying insurance, total waste of money until you need it, then it’s priceless. I carry my gear for any distance race. Getting a flat has only rarely happened to me, but if you have never ridden your bike with a flat tire down a hill (specially the front tire) then that is something you’ll never want to experience. Even if the race is gone, I want to make it back to the start without waiting an hour for the utility truck (if there is one). And if I do it right, then it’s only a few spots lost in a half IM.

I’m with you. I never race with a spare bad bad bad mojo. Nothing but possitive thoughts on race day.
I don’t take a spare when i ride TT’s or shorter Tri’s but from half iron upwards I wouldn’t want my race day experience ended early by not carrying. If you’re competitive and you flat your race may be gone (but it may not) but then you fall back to the secondary objective- finishing, and finishing strong.
whoa, be careful about the ripped side walls. Just did the Honu half last week on brand new Tufo tubulars and boy oh boy am I glad I carried a spare along with sealant in the tires. Mile 13 on the super clean road that had just been swept and I managed to put a half inch long gash in my rear tire from the rim all the way to the center of the tread. If I’d have been on clinchers I would have been waiting for tech support and the sealant just made a mess.
I will be racing with Tufo Tublubar-Clinchers that are pre-treated with the sealant.
