I am coming back to long training and racing and wish to buy
an updated watch during this sale season. 1st with mediocre 61yo vision
is the largest size a big help for seeing pace, heart rate time data ?
Is 47mm screen a real compromise? What does the higher end Enduro
and Fenix 8 do that the FORErunner 965( moderate $500) can t ?
The Forerunner 965 is the top of the line multisport watch from the biggest brand in the industry so yes, it is more than adequate for IM training.
The 965 with its bright OLED screen works great with my mediocre 63 yr old vision. Very easy to read during races in all lighting conditions. I am waiting for a similar screen in the Garmin series to replace my Garmin 530 on the bike.
And it has all the data and connections via bluetooth and ANT+ (HRM, power meters, cadence, etc.) for almost any sport you can think of.
I really like mine, as you can tell.
The Forerunner 965 is the standard bearer for all triathlon watches. The other Garmin variants are just cosmetic and style differences.
My eyes are getting bad too. I was previously on a Garmin 920 that I could no longer see. I bought the 965, much better. And as others mentioned, it is literally the top of the line multisport watch at the moment. Go with the Fenix 8 if you also want ‘fashion’ and don’t mind spending a lot more $$, and don’t mind a heavier watch.
Thank you Canuck. I see the forerunner 965 will also run alpine ski app
which is my only likely map ahead use outside my phone.
DCRainmaker will tell you that Garmin watches ‘above’ the FR965 have cosmetic changes, not performance changes (mostly). The Fenix and other upscale lines provide metal rather than plastic in parts, for example. But as a 64 y/o with tremendous vision issues - yes, bigger is better, but the game changer are the magnifiers you can stick on the bottom of your sport sunglasses and create inexpensive bifocals.
Doesn’t the edge 1050 have a similar screen?
Yup! I have a 1050 that I use on my gravel and road bikes but I need the smaller form factor of the 5 series for my TT bike.
No, the Forerunner 965 screen is a light-emitting AMOLED screen with a 324 pixels per inch pixel density. The 1050 is an old school backlit LCD with a 267 ppi pixel density.
The 1050 is very good, and big leap up from the 1040 screen. But it is far from the clarity, brightness, and readability of the Forerunner 965 screen.
