Is arugula that good for me?

Because I just had an arugula salad and it was kind of yucky. Not gag me yucky, but sort of bitter. My tolerance of nastiness is directly linked to how good something is for me, so this better be good for me…kj

bitter is good for the liver. just eat a small bit of it, mix it in with other leafy green letuces. i can’t take that much bitter either, but in a field green mix, it’s a nice contrast. add some cranberries or raisins to off set the bitterness, and it’s actually quite good!

I did mix it with a spring mix, and threw on some fresh crab meat and a squeeze of lime juice. I think I just put too much of it in the salad. The crab is yummy though.

yeah, reduce it next time. you could try a light french dressing, or olive or walnut oil and raspberry vinegar. if you don’t like it still, then you don’t like it. there are other ways to get the benefits of bitter…like with lemons, as you mentioned.

BTW, your salad is exactly what i ate for lunch yesterday, how funny! lol…it IS good

there is a weedy looking lettuce that i don’t like at all–can’t remember the name of it but geeze i hate that stuff.

Arugula…YUM!!!
Watercress too.

Yes, it is good for you. You will be able to climb better, run with a seriously neutral gait, breathe on every fifth stroke, drink less water, sleep deeper, have a better love life, have a haemocrit that slightly suggests EPO, wear only cool T-shirts and somehow race a bit better.

But don’t use too much, or it will be bitter. Perhaps add a few orange pieces to the next salad?

No, life’s too short to eat things you don’t like. The rule for my kids (and myself) is to try something 3 times. If it’s still not palatable I find a substitute.

I’m good on the love life and the t-shirts, but I could use the rest of those benefits.

Well, I’ll have to give it at least as long as it takes me to finish what I bought. What about spinach? I like spinach, can I just use that instead??

bitter is good for the liver.
That’s why I like my beer hoppy.

Yes! And it’s even better with oranges. ( I use the manadrin ones in salads all the time.)

arugula rocks, and it rocks even more on pizza: chop it really fine and put it on the pizza right before eating it… that’s my absolute favorite pizza ever (even more if it’s a gorgonzola pizza)

Leafy greens are good for you.

There’s a restaurant here in Houston that makes a thin-crust pizza with fresh arugula, taleggio cheese, and thinly sliced pears. It is out of this world!

Besides on a pizza, the only proper way to eat arugula in a salad is the way that the Italians do it, with shaved Parmesan cheese (use a potato peeler). Garnish with olive oil, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little bit of salt. Best salad ever.

spinach is a dynamo of nutrition.

And its NOT nasty.

Arugula pesto is another option:

2 good-sized bunches of arugula (about 2 cups, packed)

1/2 cup walnuts (or pignolis, or hazelnuts)

BIG pinch of salt

Olive oil

Mix all well in food processor, adding oil to desired consistency

3/4 cup good parmigiano added by hand.

Toss with pasta.

I’m an ex-chef, I remember the 1st time I tried arugula… I thought it was disgusting… however I just love a tomato and arugula sandwhich (lot’s of arugula)… ummm

If you want to to try something really bitter, go with broccoli rabe - the king of bitter vegetables. Soooooo good!
