Ironman World Championships (Nice, France) Bike Count

Kestrel would be a good example. Functionally dead, but hasnt decomposed quite yet.

1206 athletes finished the swim

Minor point: data visualisation experts tell us when to use pie charts, and that is: never. The human eye is bad at measuring size differences between the pieces of a pie.

You trust them?

Do I trust ProTriNews ?
Ya, the 1471 are probably those registered.
1206 athletes finished the swim. So maybe 265 DNS ?
But it leaves 116 bikes missing from the count.

I was just surprised by a count of 1090. That seems so low for a WC.

Just a reminder that even ironman wont give us an 100% complete total number. So while they say " More than 1,400 registered athletes" It could be 1401 or 1471. Pro’s are included in that number and Pro’s arent included in the Bike Count, We also have dead bikes and im sure we missed 5-10 just because of the nature of how we have to do that count. So…

What do you do?

Also yes we need to rethink what seems “low” for a WC becuase those are the numbers for the last 2 women’s races. So 1200-1400 is currently the new “Norm”. trust me I have had to rethink things too.

i guess that was most likely the third highest female count at world champs ever
2023 had 2174 female finishers 2022 it was 2589 but before i would guess it was lower as oftten there was 2400 spots in kona and females never had parity…

and there is a few issues why would you pay 1500 euro for nice if you can do if for almost half the price in june and get 10 k less on the bike lol . which for most would be a bonus in nice … unless you are really an athete with a top 10 chance in age group.

and a lot of people want kona , its a bit like with the new st side a lot of people dont want change despite the fact the new ST site is better … there is of course cons with the new site but by and large the new site is better and the front page article pics have improved and i would imagine the new site is not maxed out yet.

so nice seems to be the issue

at the same time it took years and years to grow the male field so i guess thats what they have to do with female fields i mean there was a time you could enter kona without qualifying.

Getting over 1000 women starting seems reasonable given the number of women who historically started at Kona pre Covid19. Also I did not realize that IM France Nice has an easier course than IM World’s Nice. How much less difficulty (elevation gain) are we talking). Is there a reason to make it even harder for the championships?

Keep in mind that the women who qualified via 70.3 did not have infinite rolldown too. They wanted reasonably high placing 70.3 finishers or those who did a full 140.6 (I assume those slots have infinite rolldown if available).

its just the nice course always has been 170 k
and the run was always a bit short , for the worlds they just asdded a bit to make it 180 and 40.2 i guess its a flatish 5 k out and back.

and i think its a good idea to have the top 5 from 70,3 races . this does add quality . i had an athelte that did not want to do an ironman won age group at 70.3 race and then suprisingly took the slot , and for first 6 hours she was top 5 in her age group , so she added to the race and i would be suprised if she was not back 2026 … otherwsie she would most likely not have done one. and she would never have gone to kona ,as way to far and family stuff.

and its clear the way to grow the sport is on the female side .

the isssue is the downhill that deteres a lot . at the same time i am sure its not an issue in a female race , its an issue if you have fat rude males in the race

Beyond Fabrications had 7 bikes in the 2010 count.

I wonder how many were in Nice?

can we get bike counts based on the bike split times? I feel like some of these bikes are not exactly meant for the climbs and descents of Nice so would be interesting to see
