Ironman T2 (To change or not to change)

…that is the question?

I am thinking about buying a more padded bike short for the swim/bike and changing into my “normal” race shorts for the run. But I am looking to cut down on transition time. My “normal” race shorts have a decent amount of compression and padding but at like mile 80…not so happy.

I assume it will only take 30 seconds to change anyways?

comfort…comfort…comfort

if your race is soon, better wear the new shorts several times and wash them a few more times to make sure there are no fit or rubbing issues.

its simple if you are more comfortable in then change…gives you a chance to catch your breath too…

Afterall its not a sprint, its an ironman!

I have similar issues with my Pearl Izumi tri shorts. They are fantastic for the run, and great for the bike for a little while, but are definitely lacking in the padding for even a half Ironman, never mind anything longer.

So what I plan on doing at Lake Placid next weekend (my first full Ironman) is wear more heavily padded cycling shorts over the tri shorts on the bike, then just strip the bike shorts off in T2: definitely quicker than a full change.

I did this at the half in Quassy and found it was fine. I had the Pearl Izumi tri shorts on under my wetsuit. I pulled the Specialized bike shorts on over them in T1. I thought this might be difficult with the tri shorts being wet, but it actually wasn’t a problem at all. I was more than comfortable on the bike. Then I actually nearly forgot to take the bike shorts off in T2 and almost started the run in two pairs of shorts, but I fixed that quickly enough and was on my way.

I have been doing all my rides the last few months (both long and short) in both pairs of shorts to stayed used to it and have found it very comfortable even after I have been in the saddle for 7 hours or so.

I’m doing a 70.3 Sunday and I’m going to wear bike shorts and then change in T2.

It’s not like I’m going to finish in the money, so I might as well take a few extra seconds and be comfortable.

If you are going to change why not change to actual running shorts?

I wore regular bike shorts during my last IM and changed into regular running shorts for the run. It was fantastic and took very little time. I plan on doign it again at Canada next month.

Im doing IMLP and its my first. This is maybe a dumb question, but where/how do you change. Just strip down right in transition? Im thinking about throwing on some spandex in T2 to avoid chaffing from wet tri shorts.

Whatever you do practice it several times. I wear DeSoto tri shorts for all of my training. I bike long and run long in them with no issues. I did an Olympic yesterday using for the 1st time the DeSoto Liftfoil tri suit. It has a larger pad than the tri shorts. It caused me discomfort on the bike that I never have wearing the normal tri shorts. So bigger pad doesnt always work the way you think it may.

I swim in my tri shorts, then just wear bike shorts over my tri shorts for the bike, then slip the bike shorts off for the run.

At IM’s there are large changing tents that everyone has to go through for T1 and T2. Kind of like a giant locker room with volunteers to help out if you need it.

They have changing tents.

double bag: I wear PI compression shorts (no pad) under craft cycling shorts for the bike. cycling shorts come off in T2, off you go.

They have big, white changing tents: separate quarters for men and women. You have to pass through them on your way out of transition. There are dozens of really helpful volunteers- gender specific in each tent. You pack whatever you want in your bike bag or run bag. Enter transition and grab the appropriate bag then head over to the tent.

For T1- Swim to bike
Run out of the water to the to transition (at IMLP this is roughly 17.2 miles long). Go down the appropriate isle (you hung your bag there already) and grab your bike bag off the hook. Take your bike stuff out of the bag (shoes, helmet, glasses, etc). Take your swim stuff off and place in bike bag (here’s where volunteers are handy). Put your bike stuff on and leave the tent. You bike bag will magically appear on the hook later on.

For T1- Bike to Run
Hand your bike off to a volunteer and head to your hook. Grab run bag and go to the tent. Take off bike stuff (shoes, helmet, etc). Take run stuff out of bag. Place bike stuff back in bag (again, volunteers are wonderful assistants here). Put on run stuff and leave to run.

Anytime you are in the tent, you can completely change clothes and maintain your modesty.

Wow there is a lot of stupid information on this thread…

If you’re going to change after the bike put on RUNNING SHORTS not tri shorts. Tri shorts are made to be worn for the entire event, if you change it only makes sense to put on running shorts.

And really someone does all their running in tri shorts? No wonder triathletes get made fun of all the time, but hey makes for a good laugh.

There are NUMEROUS reasons one can have for chosing to wear tri shorts on the run over running shorts, and how it appeals to the eye what it looks like doesn’t really matter.

Tri shorts wick better than running shorts, less chance of chafing at the top of the thighs, alot of tri shorts have pockets on the sides for gels and alot act a compression.

But, there are plenty of people in this sport who think it’s stupid if somsone has an opinion that differs from yours so I’m sure you won’t be alone.

Right I’ve never heard of running shorts with a pocket in them…

To each their own, but I’ll just make fun of people running down the streets training in their tri top/tri shorts, compression socks, visor, fuel belt, visor for a 4 mile run.

Laugh if you want, I run in tri shorts out of preference to running shorts - even for ultras. I don’t care what anyone else thinks.

Even know this sounded like a newbie question I was really looking for some responses from “burners”…

I am just going to wear bike shorts with more support (more compression/padding) and change in T2 with my race team shorts (I’ll take the 30 second extra). Thanks for the responses no matter how silly some of them were ;0)

You said visor twice.
& How do you know they only are out for a 4 mile run?
